I saved 10,500 on a 2008 GMC Pickup with a Salvage Title and was scared as heck when i paid csah for it, but 50,000 mi. later it is the number one investment I have ever made, but I did my homework.

Being that trailers are quite simple though I would think a quick look by a good mechanic good tell you yes or no with confidence.

It worries me that the trailer was damaged, but not the boat? What are the chances that nothing happened to the boat, and only the trailer suffered significant damage?

I knew a guy who had a Reatta and he had trailer damage which busted a bunch of glass off the fenders etc… His boat was fine.

Not sure what happened to the one you’re looking at, but you should be able to see damage to a glass boat fairly easily. I’d check what kind of damage there is to the trailer. If it was axle damage from a big pot hole etc… the boat might be fine. If it was hit from a side or rear I’d be more worried.

Ask to try it out, if it drives fine and loads and unloads fine, I wouldnt be too worried. Good luck!

How much damage would there have to be to a Ranger trailor to give it a salvaged title?

Uneven tire wear could be a concern. Look to see if it has new tires. Sometimes instead of fixing a wear issue, they will just throw new rubber on it.

Remember when you buy something with a salvaged title it won’t be worth as much when it comes to trade or sell it down the road. If you plan to own it for a long time and everything checks out go for it.

I would also look into if the boat was a repo or trade in. I worry about how well a repo was was taken care of, if they didn’t have the money to pay for it, did they have the money to maintain it? If it was a trade in well that could just be a dealer needing to free up some cash flow.

Do your homework on something like this.

How do I go about finding out that kind of information on the boat? I know I can do a history check on the boat if I get the hull id number? Would that report be sufficient?

I’d get the boat and trailer id numbers and call ranger, see if they have any info. I guess I wouldn’t be too worried about the salvage title on the trailer if it doesn’t have any issues. Ranger makes one heck of a trailer. I suspect a bunch of fiberglass damage is enough to total a trailer, heck one idiot parked next to you could do that easy enough without structural damage.

Quite possible a (different) boat got totaled and they kept the trailer or something to that effect, or maybe that boat had some damage that was repaired and wasn’t enough to total the boat.

Either way Ranger might know something.

The history report would be a good idea, quiz the dealer too he should have a pretty good idea where this boat came from. I work for a car dealer and I watch the online manhiem auction all of the time. It usually gives a pretty accurate selling description on the vehicles or boats.
