New proposed AIS Boat sticker fees (MN)

New 3yr surcharges were proposed to the Legislature today by the DNR. Currently the surcharge is $5.00

New: Canoes, Kakaks, sailboats, rowing shells, paddleboats up to and including 19 feet goes to $10.50

Watercraft under 17 ft. goes to 15.00
Watercraft over 17 ft. goes to 20.00
Jet Ski goes to $20.00 everything else all goes to $20.00
These new increases are in-addition to the license fees and handling charges.

The increased AIS boat fees (4 mil) will also include an increase on non-resident licenses. These funds will be used to increase enforcement, provide more inspection and to purchase some boat cleaning equipment that could be used as education or in some cases mandatory.

A companion policy bill will be introduced shortly that gives the DNR more authority to deal with AIS, check boats for water and vegetation, and then order them to be cleaned. I assume fines will increase.

We need to strongly support more $$ for AIS education and public awareness. A behavior change needs to happen, if we want to slow the spread. Maybe this fee increase and the good it will do, will help the process along.

While I still don’t agree that the dollars for AIS prevention should only come from boat/watercraft owners, I’m swimming upstream with my argument.

How about a Federal fine of 5 million dollars each and every time a tanker empties it’s ballast on the Great Lakes?

BK, with any luck the 2 line fails.

I’m pretty sure Rep. Hackbarth will be carrying the two line bill. So, anyone wanting to support it or comment on any of the other Fee’s contact the MN House Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Committee

Vern, you are my hero! I don’t care what color socks you wear!

I’ll say this again in case folks weren’t listening the first time.

ALL the “pro’s” at the DNR Roundtable this spring were against using 2 lines on inland waters…except two lone catfishermen. (actually I think there were a couple great lakes guides that wanted to copy WI line rules too)

If you want a chance for two lines to pass, you might want to send an email to each and every one on Vern’s list.

They need to realize that the folks at the Roundtable were not voted into office and it’s the people above that were. YOU have to be heard by THEM. (for or against)

Rep. Hackbarth walked out of that meeting pretty frustrated I’m sure.

You guys can bomb them with e-mail if you like. I have NEVER gotten anything except a canned response from a e-mail to a Rep. or Senator in my life.

My guess is your e-mail never gets beyond a staffer, but go ahead it can’t hurt I guess.

And for the sake of equal time………..if you are opposed to 2 lines you can send a e-mail to the above reps. also.

Only if nobody takes the time to respond. If people don’t make a call yes or no to the 2 line it’s dead as can be.

For what its worth, I just e-mailed everyone on the list above and received a reply from my local represenative less than 5 minutes after e-mailing.

Some of the reps are reading these. Also, he supports this legislation.

Maybe when writing, include a bartering option. As Fishermen, if you support the fee increase but also want something in return, such a two-line fishing, let them know. Say, I support the License Feee increase if you’ll let me fish with two-lines.

Couple questions, do they actually have a plan to stop all this with the added fee, or are they just looking to make a few more bucks off us?

And…how much of the promised lottery monies are actually going to the DNR for stuff like this?

Seems far to often they’re answer to everything is addition costs, and I don’t think we’re gonna stop this one till they stop the big boats in the great lakes from dumping their bilges.
    Which ain’t going to happen.

Allen, the proposed AIS boat sticker increase will be used to carry out many of the objectives in the report that I will post a link to.

I was one of the stakeholders who helped craft these recommendations, while I’m not onboard with all of them, I was able to influence the process toward seeing it from the anglers point of view.

    See the report at :

Ya, all fine and good, but I’ll ask the question I hear a lot, can they actually stop it and why isn’t the source of the invasive specics stopped??

    I guess that’s two questions.

Tha part that gets under my skin is that there will be an honest fisherman that gets a nice ticket from the DNR on the St Louis Bay for no AIS sticker or heavan forbid…..for hauling a livewell or minnow bucket of water….something small like that……and while the ticket is being written, there will be a 1000 footer in the background dumping a million gallons of ballast water from Tokyo Bay……….

Yeah….targetting the boaters is really the answer. I have zero faith and trust in our DNR…and this is just one small example of why. It is managed by a bunch of spineless pencil pushing politicians……. Department of Zero Results. In the top echelon, it is nothing more than a useless bunch of mouth-breathing tards……. And that’s all I got to say about that…….
