Creek Chub Fishing

I came across these pictures on the camera from last year that I meant to post. There is a creek that is near my brother’s cabin that is fairly shallow where we can wade in that holds Smallmouth, Rock Bass and even very aggressive Creek Chubs.

It’s fun, even though some of the fish aren’t very big. All of these chubs were caught on an inline spinner. I was told here on IDO once that the way to catch chubs for catfish was waxies right underneath a bobber. Well, these fish proved by their tenacity that relative to their size, they are some highly predatory fish and can be caught on lures.

Most of the creek is shallow riffles with some small pockets of knee deep water and deeper stretches up to your waist. The chubs seem to be hanging out in little schools in the pockets and riffles.

I would have caught a lot more than the dozen I got if my treble hook wasn’t so big. Although even on light tackle, they didn’t put up a big fight, it was a lot of fun to travel some isolated water watching these things just pound the spinner.

creek chub fishing is a blast, easy to catch and they usually always bite. used to fish em all the time at my old campground, just a jig and crawler.

Ok any beadhead or purple wooly or small popper or chartreuse legged white spider are my fave to hang chubs with. I got a dandy lil 2wt that loves battling these mini tarpons.

Back when I didn’t know any better I used to put a little wd-40 on a hook and catch the heck out of them. I loved catching chubs when I was 5. After we caught a couple we would go play a friendly game of chub tag. The game was over when the chubs were destroyed. Not very sporting but we were only 5.

Another fun past time with creek chubs is after you catch them is to take them swimming the mississippi river and see what happens. Sometimes big walleyes like to play with them.

Of course I thought about keeping some to bring home for cats, but these were pretty small for chubs. Jerry’s bait in Mora sells river bait, a mixture of minnows, mostly chubs, that are great for pike.

Hey Pug I know what your saying, I don’t know if you ever have but in the spring when thier colors become very distinct because of the chemistry in thier bodys, chubs are beautiful and aglow with brillant colors, the males are very vivid. Thier colors and vividness resemble trout when this time comes. Thiers nothing like a nice part of the day alone on your favorite creek with your favorite ultralight rod going after creek chubs. These fish deserve a Loomis quality approach and sure are beautiful, not to say the bigger ones of around 9″ make a great early spring meal. Chubs deserve a quality approach and are quality tablefare. In my opinion a great little and very agressive fish on inland waters.

I have a buddy who used to take about 5 worms for trout fishing. Catch a few chubs and used their tails for trout bait. He couldn’t believe everybody didn’t fish like this.

On the farm I grew up on I used to catch chubs all the time on small rooster tails. Had a barn cat who was untouchable but would follow me to the creek for her share of fresh fish. One day when I freed a snag the rooster tail flew over my shoulder and the cat pounced on it. I then had a real battle. Actually ended up having to have the old landing net brought down, penned the cat underneath it and pulled the hook out of her paw with pliers. Cat was not deterred from her free lunches, just a little more cautious.

If I’m not mistaken, those are also called redtail chubs….they are one of the best baits for BIG walleye and are expensive…around $12.00 a dz. the last time I got some for fishing Pike bay.

old timer from around here told me that where there are lots of small chubs there are no trout. He said if you a really big one and no little ones that a HUGE trout usually lives near. I like horned aces that talk to you when you unhook them.

I wish there were trout in this stream, but it is mostly rock bass and smallmouth. Once in a while you catch a pretty big smallie. It amazes me how they can live in these small waters.

Thanks. This year I am going to try and work on taking more and better pictures and not just of fish.
