Plan those river trips early boys

Wow, what a winter so far. I just checked the long range forecast and there’s no slow warming trend on the horizon so it looks like we’ll carry the current snow pack into March. With this recent dumping on top of the existing snow pack we’ve got to be back on track for some of the most extreme flooding on record this spring. If you have plans that usually take you to the Mississippi River late March, early April, you might want to bump that trip up a bit. Once those warm days of March start to work their magic… its going to get messy in a hurry.

At least there’s no more snow / rain forecast in the next 7 days that I could see. If we get a big dumping like we normally do in March on top of this… I think we might be comparing 2011 to the flooding of 1965.

I did a little digging around to see what t6he 1965 snowfall total was for up by you guys. Didn’t find that specifically, but found some interesting history for those into trivia (something to do while the river is flooded)

A few of these are pretty sad. Children at school, temps dropped to -37 and they were sent home early – many died. Weather can be very brutal.

Going there in March is not a big help if the main body of fish are still hunkered down in Lake Pepin…

Herb and I must have been around 50 in 1965…

They were dynamiting the ice on the Crow River in Hutchinson. The dam eventually broke and I spent the next summer walking the river bed for the gold I found.

One persons junk is a kids gold.

I go through L&D 3 frequently which is marked with the ’65 level. It’s about 2 or three feet above the lock it’s self.

To help relate…that’s about the ceiling of the bait shop at Everts.

Tom, flooding doesn’t hurt the fishing…it just changes the locations of the fish.

This year we could be pulling 3-ways in the Bluff’s parking lot.

I was in college in Spearfish SD at the time of the ’65 blizzard. Out on the prairies it was so bad they had to airlift hay to livestock and then later use bulldozers pulling wagonloads of hay to keep what they could alive. Lots of livestock and wildlife perished. The wolves and coyotes ate well though. The most serious thing that happened to us was that the roads were closed and the “beverage haulers” couldn’t get in jerr

We must have gotten more snow here in Richfield than last year. The mountains I build off the patio with excess snow are at least half a foot taller and last year I transferred from a lot more areas because I didn’t have someone plowing the driveway.

I wonder if they will have to open the lock at St Anthony this year like they did 2 springs ago (2009). If they do and you get the chance, go check it out. It is pretty cool seeing that water come through there at such a velocity. The fishing is a little tough though. You need to use 120oz weights.

If you do, bring your gear. The fish can only hide in the run off channels….I think. I don’t know why I didn’t try fishing in there when it was like that. If that doesn’t work, I know where they hide downstream. Manny does too.

Oh and 3-ways in the parking lot are strictly prohibited.

Here are the pictures. Sorry, James, not trying to hijack the thread, its my ADD.

I’ve stopped taking showers daily and have gone to once every two weeks if needed, just for our friends in IA.

Another good place to watch the spring thaw is at Taylors falls. That water can be wicked coming threw the narrow cliffs there.

Brian, my reference was to “early March” when the fish may not have progressed from the frozen lake…(Only God knows at this point) water temp can actually drop when ice melt starts coming down heavy…
also, during flood conditions, the entire water column can be loaded with leaves, grass and debris making fishing near impossible, like last March before we were shut down…

    Turks Report from 3/30/10<<

I’m a newbie to Pool 4 as far as walleye/sauger guys go, but one thing I have learned over the last 5 or so years is that most people fish areas they’ve caught fish before. If something changes like flooding or low water they still fish the same areas whether or not the fish are there.

You are 100 x the fisherman I am, but just because you or I can’t get on fish does not mean they aren’t biting and someone seems to always find them, some place..some how.

Can’t forget Dom’s little guys from 3/16/2010 dragging shallow.

I wasn’t going to post anymore, but this smile was calling me. First time blade bait user in Turks boat.

Turk, you were HOT last year!!

For anyone that it concerns, get your flood insurance early as there is a 30 day wait (elimination period) when purchasing a new policy.
