I didn’t know they can interbreed. Here’s a question for all you biology majors. Are they capable of reproducing or are they sterile like a mule? If they can do they breed with walleyes or saugers?
How about a retired Biology teacher?
Saugeye is a hybrid fish got from interbreeding a male Sauger and female walleye. Just as the case is for many hybrids, the Saugeye has traits and characteristics that are evident in its’ parents. The body is tabular and elongated with a tail fin which has a white border on the lower end like the walleye mother. This sleek body design allows bursting in water for short sprints as well swim for long distances at moderate speeds. Like the Saugers, Saugeye have dark blotches across their sides and back and the dorsal fin is spotted in most cases. They have a generally yellowish to golden -brown. The specie is commonly found in states in the Midwest of the USA from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee west to Oklahoma and Colorado and then to the north and Eastern Dakota.
In reproductive health, the Saugeye just like many hybrids are sterile but cases of them breeding with either Sauger or walleye have been reported which is causing alarm because of the danger to compromise on the genetic integrity of the Saugeye. Saugeye diet is primarily other species of fish, crustaceans such as crayfish, snails, insects and insect larvae.
