18″ Sunfish

An 18” Sunfish don’t exist, but these fish fight like that imaginary sunny. I’m in Orange Beach Alabama and I tested my shoulder repair yesterday. It held up to a dozen of these bruisers. They’re sheephead. They get their name from the mouth full of teeth that look like sheep’s mouth. Their primary diet is barnacles but they will take crabs, shrimp and ghost shrimp. The barnacles grow on hard surfaces so the fishing tends to be around man made structure such as bridge pilings. The one in the picture put out about 50 fish. I’m fishing off shore and you have to get along with lots of people around you. Lately it’s all ghost shrimp and getting them is whole other story Link<< If you’re coming this way you may want to build a pump because you can’t buy ghost shrimp. The bite is also driven by the tides and I have to say I haven’t figured that out. All I can say is fishing in 65 degrees and sun is hard to beat.

    I know that spot John!

Those shoulders look like they could put a bend in the old rod!
Glad your feeling better…but you didn’t have to rub in the temps! Although I’ll take the 51 it’s to get here today.

    Fish for dinner last night?

Congrats on a good day on the water/shore!

Here’s a Blackduck MN sheephead that had me thinking I broke the 30″ mark on a walleye. Knees were shaking until he surfaced. over 10lbs FO SHO.

Catch them on plastic in Loozy on oyster beds. They don’t take plastic much when keyed on structure though. Last one I hooked peeled off enough line to make boat captain think monster red.

I catch those in Florida and they are delicious! I fish from docks for them and as soon as you hook them they head for the dock legs to try and break the line on the barnacles. Great fight! RR
