Lodging is set, so no need for those recommendations.

We have been talking about taking this trip this summer as well but we are not sure where to stay. We discussed camping but I am not willing to tent it for 5-7 days. I have looked into hotels and rentals but I would love some recommendations!

Absolutely do not get anywhere near Sturgis without reservations during the rally. Every campground, motel, RV park with in 75 miles is full. If you do find a spot you will need to sell a kid to pay for it. If planning a trip the first thing you need is the dates for the motorcycle rally and work from there.

I would like to go at the end of July and Sturgis is the 2nd weekend in August (I think) but if selling a kid is an option…

Hot Springs is cool, well not really! the pool is indoor and naturally fed by hot springs. The have a really neat dinosaur atttraction there and on the out skirts of town the farmers will let you pay them a bit of money and they allow you to dig for you own fossils. I have a few fishing buddies who work in the forestry division, they speak of a trail to hike and you get to climb into a look out and th eviews are to die for. I’d never go back to Crazy Horse again, waste of money and time. Don’t discount Sturgis during the rally, the kids might need eye patch’s though.

Were they “working on it” when you went ? That is the thing, they have to be actively carving for it to be anything to look at…. I thought it was pretty cool watching the heavy equipment working away.. they looked like toys on the mountain Now being there when they have a blast.. well, I think that would be a blast But, if they are not working = boring…

I remember taking my kids to a mammoth dig down by Custer state Park. My son later got STUCK in a chorus bus during a college chorus tour along that needles road. Ya, think they would have checked that out first???

    The Better Half

Last year i stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Hill City. The hotel stay was noneventful which is usualy a good thing.

It was a central location in a smaller town. It turned out to be a good idea because we hade rain and low clouds the first four of our five day stay. We went to Rushmore and the Needles Hwy the last day and had great visability.

    Enjoy your Trip
