Found fish in the freezer….question

So, I uncovered a bag of fish in the freezer while doing a re-org. No date on the bag. I thought it was time to fry some fish up, so I grabbed a fresh bag and the mystery one as well.

Now that is has thawed, I know that it’s a walleye fillet that is over 4 years old. Would you? fry it up and see what it’s like……or pitch it w/o trying to fry it?

Id fry it just to see if its any good, might have to soak it in water first to get rid of some of the freezer burn. Put some tartar sauce on it, it might not be bad at all.

I’ve found fish in my chest freezer that were at least 4 years old and were fine. I freeze my fish in water so air can not get to the fillets. This helps prevent freezer burn.

thaw it out and wash it off with water real good! then smell it! if it smells really fishy! that is what it will taste like! if it smells like the fresh bag! that is what it will taste like!

Soak it in Buttermilk over night…Buttermilk has an enzyme that will neutralize even brown freezerburned fish. Professional Chefs use it regularly to prepare fish. I pour some on all frozen fish I am going to cook (via a plastic bag) and let it soak for at least a couple hours in the fridge.
At four years the flavor may be gone…time for the cajun Sturdiwheat seasoning!

Take a nice pine 1X6 and put butter, lemon, honey, salt and pepper on it. Place the walleye fillet on the board. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, turn the fish after 15 minutes. When done throw away the fish and eat the board.

I usually make fish chowder out of any older fish I discover in the freezer.

Fry it…try it…if it tastes funny, well here kitty kitty or depending on how well you like your dog…he’ll think it’s a treat.

Speaking of funny tasting…If you were stuck on an island with a clown and to survive and you had to resort to eating the clown…would he taste funny ? Can’t remember who the comedian was, but that one always sticks in my mind !

I found a bag like that in the freezer not to long ago. My in-laws are always asking for “fresh” fish so….I gave it to them, they are still alive, and they said it was great!

You got any booze in the house? If so, have about 6 drinks before the fish gets done. It will be some of the best darn fish you ever had. I always cook that way

When buying walleyes from Piggly Wiggly Jay, you should eat them right away, not let them get freezer burnt

    Sounds like Steven Wright.

By the way, I think some took my CPR comment the wrong way. I didn’t mean you shouldn’t keep fish. I was going for, if they are old and might not be good to eat, release the fillets back into the water.

I’d soak it in buttermilk for a decent amount of time, then bon apitit’ . I dont see it being a problem anyway.
