If you have 22 minutes and love documentaries of when men were men, this is cool.

This is a short documentary about winter railroading in the Canadian Rockies and the men who keep the lines clear. The stretch between Revelstoke and Field, British Columbia, is a snow-choked threat to communications. The film shows the work of section hands, maintenance men, train crews and telegraph operators.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. Reminds me of stories my Dad and Grandfather used to tell me.

Bret, do you know if there is place to find these old school documentaries? I really enjoy watching them.

    Bret,

Thank you for posting the video. Take away the pipe and that engineer was my dad. Same engineer’s cap, same pinstriped bib overalls, same exact watch (which I still have) The people that I knew that were railroaders loved their jobs and the life style.

Time have changed, the railroads today have made the job miserable. The majority working now days cant stand the job. Very tough life style. I hate it and would quit today if I could.

My experience with the railroads was based on watching and listening to my dad who was an engineer for the Great Northern from 1946 until he passed away in 1976. Back then there was a “brotherhood” with the guys that worked with my dad. It was present even to me as a little kid. It was cool to have your dad be like Casey Jones.

I worked for Cmstpprr for 10 years and absolutely loved the job and the people.I was a gandy dancer and maintained the tracks and worked on extra gangs. I met people from all over the minnesota wisconsin iowa and illinois areas in my 12 years of working. If it wasn’t for bettering myself i would have had over 30 yrs in as of last summer.I always tell the guys i used to work with that my wife made me change for the better. And i am still married.
