Looking for gloves THAT WORK

You guys need to broaden your horizons. A lot of snowboarding companies make some great gloves that allow you to keep dexterity in your hands. They can be pretty spendy (and they aren’t durable when it comes to construction work), but man do they keep your hands warm. I’d recommend a brand called Drop.

My grandpa told me a while back that you can wear bread bags over your socks in the winter. You still get the insulating effects from your socks, and the bag minimizes the cooling effect of sweat evaporating… Your feet probably stink after a day of work though.

Big bread bag fan in the ’70’s. Now I just go inside when my tootsies get cold.

One huge problem with bread bags, (which we also used as kids) they don’t breathe. If you have a hike of any distance, your feet will sweat and since they don’t breathe, your socks & feet will be wet and shortly after, cold as well.

Been there, done that. No sense going backwards especially with the clothing we have available now a days.

My dad got a pair of these battery powered heating gloves. I thought he was nuts for spending that much on a pair of gloves. But if your hands are never warm then it might be worth the investment. I tried them on and they are extremely warm.

I am curious if your fingers turn white? If so, you and I have the same issue, it’s called Raynaunds syndrom. It can be stand a alone disease, but usally comes along with auto immune diseases.. It has ended ice fishing for me, mine is bad now, My hands can be virually frost bit at 50 – 60 degrees. No gloves are warm enough for me to be out for an extended period of time.

Ron, I’ve never seen white fingers. Not yet anyway. The still remain pink, yet hurt so bad you may see tears. Of course during that time, the capillary refill time is drastically lengthened.

You could try the more frugal means of sticking your hands in your pants.

Or if you can stick them down someone elses.

Hot chocolate or hot Broth if you don’t like coffee will keep the body warm also Mike

Hey pops, I still have to many teeth for broth but will keep it in mind when I get to your age.

Figured someone would bring up caffeine. A cup of coffee will warm me right up but not sure if I have ever felt the effects of caffeine cooling me down. Im sure it does but must not be as drastic effect on the body as hot or cold liquids.

The magnitude of problems from Raynaunds varys. There is a lot of info on the internet about this. Keep in mind some medications such as betablockers use to treat high blood pressure can make the symptoms worse. Not much for treatment other than doing the best you can to avoid exposure cold.

Caffeinated coffee constricts blood vessels as does all caffeinated drinks.
Your much better off going with hot chocolate or some other warm, decaffeinated beverage.

This may seem a little strange and I haven’t tried it enough when fishing to know for sure but doing some early December trapping I wore a pair of thin latex gloves under choppers to minimize human scent. When handling trapping lures and traps I just removed the choppers as long as needed which was only a minute or 2 before putting the choppers back on. My hands never got cold so concluded the reason was they never got wet. The latex shedded most of the water/snow and what was left was easy to wipe dry on the jacket or pants. Usually my hands get cold from getting wet, which gets the outer gloves wet.

Bottom line it’s an easy and very inexpensive experiment to buy and wear a pair of latex gloves inside your favorite outer gloves and remove the outer ones when handling fish, minnows or whenever your hands can get wet. Also they don’t affect your ability to sense bites while still keeping hands dry if you are in fishing in marginal temps.
