Its not new, but something I want to return to doing this year. When the winds are right, and huge thermoclines develop on Lake MI, open water flyfishing for Lakers, Steelhead, chohos. There is something magical about being over water that is from 260’s to well over 300 feet deep. When you find the major thermoclines rolling over out there, debris is everywhere and fish stacked on it. We caught so many fish along these on flyrods and light tackle. Also kind of bizarre to look back towards land only to see ships on the horizon. Until i spent a lot of time out there, I never realized just how busy Lake MI is with huge cargo/tanker ships.

We also found what we assume are a few ship wrecks. I would like to go back and drop a camera down to see what is there….but those were in 265fow

1 – get on the water more. 5 outings last open water due to son heading to Marines, daughter to Japan, new granddaughter & time with 2 y/o granddaughter… Summer was great!
2 – get on 2 of my favorite bodies of water again. LOTW – where it all started in 1963 with Gramps… Oh the memories… Experience Devils Lake, ND again to explore the vast new waters with the recent years expansion…. Makes me not want to sleep thinking about it…

    Great post tgruenke!
