1992 Ford F150. While driving at mid to high speeds I hear what sounds like a rolling, dry bearing noise from the front left hub. When at low speeds until I stop there is a grabbing/ pounding noise from that same wheel. This seems to stop when in 4 wheel. When on the lake last week I know my 4 wheel was slipping in and out. Any ideas? Right now my truck does not have lock outs. Is the 4 wheel maybe not unlocking all the way and grabbing?

On my old Ford, I’ve had metal on metal when pads get bad plus a bad/sticking caliper and you got one heck of noise. However, I don’t know why it would go away in 4×4 if that was the case.

On my current Ford, I somehow got moisture a vacuum line and it was causing one wheel to go in and out of 4×4. Made a heck of a racket when it attempted it at speed, more of a clacking sound, not rubbing.

Could be a number of things. Perhaps one of your caliper slides is stuck. this is causing the hub sound. The 4×4??? Maybe something is wrong with your differential.

I had trouble with my Ford last summer, went to a web site called Ask.com. They set you up with a ford mechanic. it cost me 9 bucks to get the info and $23 for the part, fixed it myself. The shop wanted $250 for the same thing. For 9 bucks its worth it, the shop cost about $100 just to tell you its broke.
