OK, I am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. We have some nice oak tables and book shelves that I would like somebody to re-finish into more of a cherry to match our home decor. I have not run into anyone in the TC yet in my searching. If you know anyone that does this, please let me know.

    Thank you for your time…

You are talking about a lot of work. For one any polyurethane finish that is on now will need to be stripped chemically and then cleaned with Lacquer Thinner. A good light sanding should be done after the cleaning. Then you need to stain the wood with a good stain, I would suggest a gel stain.

Getting it to match will be the worst part, you may get it close but you never know how it will come out with another stain already embedded in the wood.

It will be rather expensive unless you can find an older retired person that can do it at a better price.

Just a word of caution…have a sample of oak stained/finished and bring it home to look at amongst your cherry millwork. The color/hue can easily be matched by a good stainer. The grain pattern of the wood is very different, and you may not like how they look together. I’ve been down that road a lot with customers…..

chances are that the finisher that you choose will use a two part staining process. the first being a spray on stain with a micro toner. the second being a wiping stain over the micro toner. I would insist that he uses a vinyl sealer and a conversion varnish top coat not a pre catalized laquer. The laquer finish looks nice also but will not hold up over time on a table top expecially if it comes in contact with any liquids at all. We own a cabinet shop and this is the finish that we finish all our furniture and cabinetry with.
