Taking into consideration that both vehicles have decent

tread and both are good runners……..

Which of these two would you pick to make it home in a

snow storm like we just had in the metro?

    1. 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6

    2. 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Inline Six cylinder

    Thanks for your help!

Jeep. I owned 3 including a 94 Cher. That 4.0 inline six is a classic. Age can be a big deal though. 16 years is pretty darn old for a vehicle. Especially a 4×4.

I drive a 1998 jeep cherokee. It is starting to nickel and dime me but still going strong. My buddy has an Explorer and it is also doing just fine. I would go with the newer one personally.

Depending how the Jeep is set up posi front and rear Jeep has always been a better 4 wheel drive as far as getting thru stuff. That being said the Jeep rides much rougher, will use more fuel, being older more likely to being close to rusting thru somewhere if not all ready. Less room inside the Jeep for caring stuff.

Me personally I would get the Explorer. A little bigger vehicle much easier to get parts, better ride, better mileage, newer. I guess I would not base my decision on a once in eleven year storm.

Jeep the 4.0 is a very long lasting motor. I might be one sided though,(worked for Dodge/Jeep dealership for 23 years)
They all can have problems, drive both and see what fits you the best.

As much as I am not a fan of Ford, with that age difference, I’d have to go with the Ford.

Neither are very good choices in my opinion given the age of the Jeep and the well, brand of Ford. This is just off of what I’ve seen in the shops I’ve worked at.

The age is the big thing that leads me towards Ford though, big fuel mileage and relaibiliy differences with OBD II in 95+ vehicles.

I’ll throw in a vote for the Ford, and not because its a ford.

You picked a year range where leaps and bounds were made in the vehicle industry in regards to design technology especially in regards to life of individual parts and components.
However, if both were 2002’s, I’d take the Jeep no questions asked.

I’d hold out & look for an ’89 JEEP…. Sad I got rid of mine… For your scenario… speaking about the storm… da JEEP…..

I have owned 2 mid 90’s exploders and both were driven into the ground before replacing them. one died at 260,000 and the other at 295,000 miles with only one exception aside from general maintenance. They need ball joints on a regular basis.I am looking for my third one shortly.Jeep probably work out too but I would go for newer model year for the money.

I have own 6 Jeep Cherokee’s w/4.0 ,my last one I sold over a year ago running with 310,000 mile on it,it is still running strong and would NOT hesitate again to buy another as a matter of a fact I am now looking to purchase one for the FW so I can lay our Subaru wagon to rest.

Also as a mechanic I also choose the Jeep way over the Ford,if you do purchase a Jeep please holler at me and I will give you a list of things to look at and to make it last a life time.

If the Jeep is in good shape and priced right jump on it you wont be sorry

The ford, age being my biggest factor, and I think that the explorers are pretty well made.
