We had a wind storm rip off shingles on the front of our house which is only 5 years old. The shingles on our house are not made any more. Insurance only wants to pay for re-shingling the front, so our newer home would have to different colors from front to back, not to mention the garage next to the house would be different, but I guess I will have to live with that.

What are my chances of disputing this and at least getting the whole house shingled one color?

Tom, I have a homeowner that is dealing with the same issue right now. His policy has specific language regarding discontinued shingles/roofing and they only cover a portion of that. In there eyes, its functioning and there is nothing wrong with it. Saddest part was I filled in blown off shingles to seal up his roof as an emergency measure. His insurance adjuster sent him a letter “I see you already had it fixed”…..completely different color shingles He is trying to get them to pay for it all (tear-off and replacement) which most likely won’t happen.

I think Stickboy has a lot of dealings with insurance companies and repairs, and may have some suggestions for you. I deal primarily in new construction and high end remodeling.

Sorry to hear about your problem Tom.

My advice would be to contact your agent and get him involved. In my experience i’ve seen claims adjusters act very difficult in regards to settling claims such as these. It often comes down to what the actual wording in the policy states vs. what is the right thing to do to keep the policyholder happy.

In most instances, I was able to assist my client and help him state his case to the claims representative, and if we still weren’t able to come to an agreement, I would take this matter to the claims supervisor.

Good clients are tough to keep these days, and i’m sure your agent would be happy to assist you.

General Insurance policies say you need at least 50% of shingles damaged/ripped off before they will cover a complete re-shingling.

some also say that in a certain “square area” needs a certain percentage of damage to get a full re-roof done. the other problem is when storms roll through and damage lots of houses it is easier to get a full replacement. then individual ones.

You need a contractor to get in the fight with you. Insurance adjustors are not there to help you in any way. A call to your agent should be made asap, too. It is rare to find a newer house that doesn’t have a “total replacement” clause. To not have that would make insurance practically pointless.

However, keep in mind that most insurance companies aren’t there to help you. And who your insurance company is will make a difference. American Family in particular is terrible about claims.

I’m a general contractor and I deal with insurance claims every so often. I have seen some really bad and unfair treatment by insurance on obvious claims. DO NOT back down!! They have to pay to restore it to the condition it was in. Did you have mismatched shingles before? Hell No! Find a quality roofing contractor to help you.
