Well Maturi did it to us again, Jerry Kill will be named the head football coach this afternoon. As a former Gopher I am not overly excited about the choice, but I am hoping for the best for the programs sake. I will say this about Kill, he seems to win where ever he goes. Yes he coached in the MAC Conference, that is a tough conference, trust me I know!! OHIO, not Ohio State, OHIO beat the Gophers at the dome a few years ago. That speaks volume of that conference. He has won several games against the Big Ten the past few years, against good programs. Kill also knows football, more of an X’s and O’s coach, better than his predecessor(Brother Brew). Again, I’m not overly thrilled about this hire, but as an alum, I am giving him a shot. What are other IDO’ers feelings? Gophers hire Jerry Kill

Jerry Kill (What’s your take)

My memory must be better then yours. Northern Illinois coached by Jerry Kill beat Brew this year.
I’m thinking the Gophers need to apply to the conference that Bethel is in. They are going to get ran right out of the Big 10!
If the administration truly believes they can’t compete (which the last 2 hires insinuates) then they ought to have the balls and come right out and say so.
This is more embarrassing to the U then getting beat by South Dakota State.
December 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm #914875He can take B players and turn them into A- players over the course of their college career.
Just what the U needs.

Agreed as long as you don’t have any high expectations. This program will never finish higher then 4th in the Big 10.
But the bright side is if they can win just a couple more games then they are bowl bound!! Keep in mind that there are like 50 bowl games so you have to really suck not to make a bowl. But Brew did prove that possible to.
Kill might be a great guy. But this is a terrible hire!

I really hope he can become the new Gordy Shaw!!! Shaw saw something in players that no one could ever see. Eslinger, enough said… There wasn’t a soul in D-1 that even looked at Eslinger. and looked what he turned out to be, only the best player to EVER wear maroon and gold. I sure hope with all of his high school experience he can recruit MN/WI. If Kill was smart he may even try to Hire Shaw back.
December 6, 2010 at 7:31 pm #914883at least this guy was a head coach unlike that last maroon Maturi hired. i got no dog in this fight but NIU has been a pretty competitive program with this guy in charge. Kill and Bielema are buddies from their Kansas days. Bielema says he is a heck of a coach. hopefully the Gophs can keep some of their blue chippers in state rather than losing them to UW. thanks, by the way. Gilreath has been great this year.
December 6, 2010 at 7:52 pm #914877You guys got a good one here!!!! I followed him when he coached at SIU when my son went there. We are stunned and dissapointed that he’s leaving NIU. But hey everyone deserves the chance to move on to something better if they believe that’s what their doing. Kill has turned around every program he’s been to!!!
December 6, 2010 at 7:56 pm #914891Another hard pill to swallow from Maturi. They needed a big name to get the MN High School coaches attention. Leach or Shannon would have been better choices. But I guess we’ll see.
December 6, 2010 at 8:16 pm #914895Shannon is no better then Brewster. If you can’t recruit the Florida players to Florida you got no chance of getting them here.
I’ll give Kill the benefit of the doubt for now. It’s certainly not his fault he ended up here. But I really don’t think Minnesota is the place to win. Although that might change if the Vikings leave. At least then we will have the money to start paying players.
December 6, 2010 at 11:19 pm #914950I hope he turns out to be like Bo Ryan is to WI Basketball. I knew he would be an awesome Big-10 coach when I was at Platteville. Just wish the Gophers would have seen that (now that we have Tubby, I’m happy though)
My guess is that the Gophers tried to get some bigger names and were unable to. No big surprise there…
December 6, 2010 at 11:27 pm #914951From the Wisconsin head Football Coach: We want to thank the President and the AD of the UM for hiring this man. It will continue to help our recruiting throughout Minnesota and Bring a National Championship Here to Wisconsin..
December 6, 2010 at 11:32 pm #914954the reason that Bo Ryan is so successful, is that he gets Five guys who are WILLING TO PLAY DEFENSE.. and in playoffs and in the tourny Defense and Free throws win games..
plus Ryan only needs to find 5 guys to buy into the program.. and not 50 guys..this reminds me of the Tulsa coach that Wisconsin brought in.. and the rest of the MAC complained that he was still recruiting D2 schools.. While big monster after Big Monster left Wisconsin for Michigan or Notre Dame..
the Day that Alveraz took over. He said he was building a fence around Wisconsin and not going to lose a player.. and they haven’t lost anyone for years..
sorry.. but this is a great Wisconsin hire for you..
December 7, 2010 at 1:14 am #914987I think it was a good move seeing as the second choice was Chryst. Why would you want a guy that is in control of one of the most explosive offenses in the country when you can have a guy who gets upset in the MAC championship? This should keep the top MN recruits coming to Wisconsin.
December 7, 2010 at 1:19 am #914993Much the same way Kessel left to come to the Gophers to play hockey.
December 7, 2010 at 3:44 am #915019Wisconsin didn’t need Kessel. The Gophers could use all of those MN players that will be playing in the Rose Bowl.
hansonPosts: 728December 7, 2010 at 3:52 am #915020I don’t have much to base my opinion on but darn near everything I’ve read since he’s been hired is along the lines of “what the hell were you thinking?”
If I remember right to when Brewster was hired, we were going to the Rose Bowl. LOL!
Hopefully the scrutiny and lofty expectations makes Kill rise to the challenge. Brewster came in with his song and dance and never quit singing.
December 7, 2010 at 7:12 pm #915198This is a bad hire for the U. Nothing against this guy, but his name does not automatically excite the fan base, the MN high school kids, no one.
It actually does the U some harm in the short term that is now working against this coach in his efforts to recruit MN.
Someone like Leech or other could have sent a message that the U was serious.
That said, the U did pull off wins vs. Illinois and Iowa with the same group of guys that the Brew had so maybe, just maybe, getting someone who can coach could pay off quicker than we are now expecting.
Maybe…………
December 7, 2010 at 7:56 pm #915217He is a good coach. I hear they tried to hire Barry Alvarez. The Gophers used to have a mighty football program. Success is fleeting the Big 10. They will rise again when they get real in 20-25 years.
December 7, 2010 at 9:13 pm #915232They haven’t had a successful program since 1960. Once the Vikings came and ALL schools started recruiting and playing the blacks from the South it’s been all down hill.
