When I was a kid, I found a big fox den in a gob pile. I went home and got some carbide, dumped some water in and waited, nothing. Threw a match in and poof, still nothing. It was still flaming abit and I had given up on a fox, I poured the rest of my water in, why I don’t know. I thought the world had ended, dust, explosion, rocks. My ears rang for hours. Another lesson learned and lucky to not have been killed. Carbide is how they made or make acceteline !!

Carbide lamps are one of those bygone links to my childhood. i was just telling the boy about them a couple of months ago. They were stinky and a pain but they were cheap light. I remember back in the day you bought carbide in bulk at the feed store. I think it was like 17 cents a pound or some such thing. There were many ways to use it that kept a young boy amused and I am thankful that I made it to adulthood with all my limbs still attached

Years back when I shot Bullseye we used a small thing that looked kinda like a lighter, you’d put a small piece of carbide in it, spit…er…place a couple of drops of water in it and screw the top on, spin the sparker wheel and it’d ignite the gas coming out the top, that flame was was pretty sooty.

We’d use that soot to blacken the sights on our .45’s.

I think I still have the can of carbide and that device…somewhere..:)
