Does anyone still do it? Is it legal still? Is a small creek better than a pond? What do you use for bait? I had some sucess a few sommers ago, and i was thinking about trying it again. Just wondered if anything changes with technique in the winter. Thanks.

Dog food or stail bread works great for bait. Not sure if your MN or Wiscony but with out a commercial trappers license I beleive your aloud up to something like 30 dozen minneows. A creek that is deep and doesnt freeze over would be awsome but small ponds are great for Rainbow Dace!! ANd fat heads as well as suckers!!

We trap alot of are minnows in a branch of the Zumbro. Had good success till cold weather came. I asked a “old boy” and he said most likely the minnows headed to deaper pools, which from where I live could quite possibly be the lake.

Thanks guys. My thoughts were dog food bread as well. I’ll have to take a look for the deeper pools. I used an old panny hoe(spelling) for the bait keeper(and yes it was one of MY old ones ). What do you guys use to keep the “bait” in.

Tuck took a gatorade bottle and drill some small holes in it and wired it in the minnow trap.

To trap your own minnows in wisconsin for personal use, they have to be trapped from the body of water they are going to be used because of the new VHF rules. I like trapping is streams the best, when I was trapping in ponds I got a lot of mud minnows, and in the streams a lot of different kinds of minnows, including red tails, shiners, etc. But I did get a lot of mud puppy’s in the streams too, and they were really big. I used dog food for bait. I like the Frabill minnow traps the best, inexpensive and work great.

But with the WI rules doesn’t that mean that if you trap minnows in a stream you can’t use them anywhere but that stream? Pardon my ignorance.

no your right, I did not explain my self correctly. I trap them out of a stream right where it hits the lake itself, especially in the spring time, when the baitfish from the lake will head up the stream to spawn. Thank you! sorry I did not explain myself correctly the first time.

I trap all my minnows from my pond summer and winter. I use dog food and oat meal made into balls and i cook them in the oven and drop them in my traps.I get lots of bait fatheads and rainbows its work and its free bait.
