    Are you ready to go?

    Is your gear ready?

    Have you scouted your area?

    Is your stand good?

    Are you ready to go?

    I don’t mean mentally.

I mean are you going to be one the opening weekend statistics? The Great White Hunter? The guy that sits behind a desk all year and only goes in to the woods once a year. Dressed with heavy clothing and really heavy boots. The predicted low for opening morning for me is 19 degrees.

Are you going to drag that huge buck you shot any distance? Are you still pumped up about the huge buck you just shot?

    Don’t be another statistic!

Being prepared for deer hunting is more than gear and scouting. The HUNTER needs to be physically sound and able to handle what is about to come.

At age 40 years old my father shot a nice buck and had a heart attack and died.

For many years I did not hunt. I am going back to hunting again after a 6 year hiatus .

I have been walking 5 miles a day for the last 3 months.

About six years ago my wife started to nag me about going to the doctor. She said with my family history I needed to be able to hunt. My wonderful wife Barb scheduled a physical for me and has for the last 6 years.

That initial physical showed that I had high blood pressure and my cholesterol was way too high. I have both under control now.

The HUNTER needs to be physically sound and able to handle what is about to come.

    Don’t be another statistic!

Good advice… now that rifle in the picture, brings to mind bad statistics. Remember everybody, treat every gun as if it were loaded…..

muzzle is pointed way behind me.

I unloaded the gun before I began dragging the deer and double checked it before the photo.

My dad always said “Empty guns kill more people than loaded ones.”

For the first time, I really don’t care if I go or not. 200+ acres, 7 trail cams, and only 2 or 3 pics per week of a couple resident does. A couple pics over the last couple months of a tiny buck. Youth hunt, my daughter never got to see a deer. Then add the 30 or so guys hunting on all the neighboring properties and nearly every one of them needs to kill a doe for a buck tag. Neighbors had 37 guys out hunting for the early season to get does for buck tags…. 4 yearlings and 1 doe was shot. My 12 year old daughter has been asking to go back up north grouse hunting instead of “watching the trees grow in November” How do you argue with that?
    BTW Len – good advise!

Sounds like you’re hunting the same woods as me Randy!
First time ever I will not be tossing the orange on opening morning or all season for that fact.

I just hope my son, who turns 12 opening day sees a few deer and maybe gets a shot. Saturday can’t come fast enough. Little snow on the ground wouldn’t hurt either. What did the Winter/Radisson area get?

I was up between Minong and Hayward on Sunday and would estimate they had around 8 inches.

And I would guess…one set of deer tracks between Hayward and Minong with 4 wolf packs tracking it down.

I’m going to let the WI DNR have my deer tag this year and for years to come if they keep running the management program the same way. It would be nice to see some fur come back to the North woods.

Best of luck to you guys who are going out

Well, it will be a good indicator to see if Scott Walker will be a man of his word.

Chapter 15 of the Wisconsin Statutes delineates the formal duties of the seven-member board. Board Members are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate.

Let’s hope he appoints the right people……

This is my 4th year of letting the dnr have my tag. Good luck to all the hunters and hunt safe.
