a friend of ours gave us a big buck that he had shot.. so my wife and I processed it on Saturday.. it took about 6 1/2 hours to get about 60 of hamburger.. and then two roasts, about 8 packs of steaks and the loins..

but , this deer had NO FAT.. I couldn’t come up with any suet for my feeders..

I am wondering if this means another warm winter.. ? it was solid meat.. the whole neck and the back.. no fat.. or next to none..

opinions? comments welcome.. this is mostly a weather related question..

It’s no surprise that a big buck wouldn’t have any fat on it after chasing does and fighting off other bucks for a month now. I think no fat is very typical

Sounds like a lean, mean, sex machine. Full rut is a heck of a work out for bucks.
We’ll accept that mild winter theory too old rat

If a buck has bred 3 or more does there is a good possiblity that’s he has drawn his reserves to low, with an early bad long winter he would have been I trouble!! Thanks for sharing!!

HA, Cause we don’t run 6 miles to get it and then run another 8 to get it again!

We took a buck last weekend with VERY little fat. We took two doe this weekend and they both were the fattest we have seen for quite a while. All three were taken in the same area. Go figure!!

No fat on the Bucks we shot this year as well. We didn’t get any does this year but in all the years I have been processing deer I have never seen any corillation between fat on the deer and the harshness of winter.
