looking to buy a food vac sealer. Looking in the price range of $120 to $140 at cabelas and bass pro. The reviews are all over the place,so not sure if any of them are any good. would it be worth it to jump to the higher $$ ones. I would use it 10 to 20 times a year. Two of those would be week trips Sealing 20 or 30 bags. Thanks for any help.

I bought mine from the man’s mall. Food Saver (vac 1050). Liked it so well I bought a basic model for the 5er. Both get used on a very regular basis-no problems with either- jerr

We’ve owned the top of the line Foodsaver model for about 25 years. That means 2 models in that span of time because they improved them with more features. I’m sold on this brand and use it for all of my fish, cheeses, lunch meats etc. I also use it for preserving Vidalia onions from May, when they are available, until YE. It’s amazing how things last when the air is withdrawn. I also package my venison in vac sealer bags.

When you seal the fish and such, Do you find a problem with it sealing all th eway accross the bag? I could never get mine to seal.As the juices/water/air was sucked out, It would never seal….

My buddy brought the $100 food save to LOW this year and WOW is all I can say! Needless to say I picked one up at Fleet Farm for $100 when I got home. I have used to seal up a few bags of fish so far and it works great. Food Saver all the way for me

Well in part they really aren’t meant to do liquid in bags, unless it’s frozen it’s kind of a pain, Well I don’t pack my fish in Liquid, but there is some moisture usually I put a paper towel in the top of the bag and seal it in there. I suppose you could mostly freeze the fish then vacuum them.

Secondly and most importantly I always hold the machine down on the bag after mine automatically seals, for a good 10 seconds, sometimes I hit the vacuum button again and it pretty much start the seal process right away, giving extra contact time on the seal made all the difference, rarely do I have issues now. Gotta give it enough time to melt the bag enough to make a really good seal.

    X2

I also pat the fillets with a paper towel before placing them in the bag. We love our Food Saver and it does stay busy

I think that if you remove th bag right after you the machine does its final seal is when you lose the vaccum seal inside.
I have found that if you let the bag sit on the food saver for small amount of time and let it cool off before removing it you will not lose your seal, as sometimes happens.

What helped me with this problem is I buy the roll of plastic that I cut to length. Give wet products a little more room for the liquids before they get to the seal area.

When we seal anything wet (fish, etc) we’ve learned to put the bag and contents in the freezer till it gets to the chrystal stage- -just the start of freezing- -and then seal it. Doing that prevents the chance of sucking moisture into the machine. Also, if you have a lot of bags to seal, give the sealing rails time to cool. Ours seem to seal more effectively if you’re not overworking the heaters. jerr
