In my opinion there is no such thing as missing the fall bite for panfish. I have found that the bite tends to only intensify as the ice season approaches, and we all know that first ice can be lights out . I would try to fish areas where you normally find a good bite on first ice. This time of year I like to fish vertically with ice tackle and often will actually use my ice rods when fishing from the boat or from a dock. I limited out on panfish on pool 5a Monday this way. They were pretty aggressive and hanging around wood in 9-15 feet of water.
