Was fishing the lower end of pool 2 today and seen a wolf come by on the shore line. Ive seen wolves in the wild before and yes this was one. It was on the south shore of spring lake near the park. Have there been wolf sightings in this area? Wish I could of got a photo but it was just to far out for my camera.

Probably haven’t been any wolves in Dakota county for about 100 years. You sure it wasn’t a big Coyote?
November 4, 2010 at 2:37 am #907856How big do yotes get? I would guess this to be 100# or better. Bigger than Jons rottweiler Brute.
November 4, 2010 at 2:45 am #907857Wow, that was a big animal! My rule of thumb was to compare the size of the wolf/coyote to a deer. A timber wolf is as big as a deer, and it sounds like what you saw was that size.
Further confusing the issue is that Coyotes have been cross breeding with dogs which is making them bigger too.
November 4, 2010 at 2:50 am #739640My 1st thought was that it was a deer. Was looking for for the rack and kept think that thing just isn’t moving right. To much trot in its step. It never did stop for me to get a great look at it but it was not a deer and seemed very big for a yote.
November 4, 2010 at 5:05 am #907875there are wolfs just acrossed the boared by the rush river so there could esily be one in hastings
November 4, 2010 at 11:28 am #907880Several years ago, there was an article in one of the twin city papers,on the documented wolf population in the Black River bottoms area,of sw Wisconsin. The folks studying them stated that it was only a matter of time before they crossed the Mississippi. Quite a bit south of your sighting but…who knows.I saw an animal last week in my neck of the woods that also had me scratching my head as to what the heck was that. And I’ve seen lots of Coyotes.
November 4, 2010 at 11:43 am #907884I have no problem believing it was a wolf. Me and a buddy saw a bobcat about 5 years ago near pigseye.
Take care!

Coyotes can be larger or smaller bases on location to some extent. Wolves can easily exceed the 100 pound mark where food is plentiful. An average height for these dogs 12″ on the fox, 15-17 inches on the yotes and 30″ on the wolves.
November 4, 2010 at 12:14 pm #907892I could have swore I saw a wolf this summer fishing south of Hudson on the Croix (across from Afton). There were no people around. It was probably around 100#. It looked like it was stalking the shoreline. I watched it for about a 1/4 mile before it headed up the bluff into the woods. At the time I thought it looked like a wolf but could be someones dog (some type of a sheppard/husky mix), but it was very good sized.
If a cougar can be in the area, why not a wolf?
November 4, 2010 at 12:57 pm #907905Wolf or ‘yote? This is from last year but we have seen them for 4 straight years now. I found their home and our deer numbers (especially smaller fawns) have gone way down.
November 4, 2010 at 1:08 pm #907909Hard for me to tell from these pics, they are a little distant but I would say yote.
I will never forget the first wolf I seen in the wild by Drummond WI. It was one monster doggie!!!!!I have no doubt that a wolf/wolves could be around the Hastings area. And if so you will hear about them soon from the deer hunters.

Uhhhhhhh….not the deer hunters I know…
November 4, 2010 at 1:29 pm #907918This is a young wolf from my trail cam, visiting one of my bear baits… They have no problem living very close to town and have spread widely from the original seven relocated in the U.P. 25 years ago. We have a summer population of over 1,500….according to our DNR biologists. 72% of their scat during the year is fawn bones (from a 2008 study by Mich Tech Univ)
November 4, 2010 at 1:51 pm #907929No cougar. Just got a message that one of the locals in that area has a large husky mix that likes to run around. Thinking there is a good chance this is what I saw. But then again you never know.
November 4, 2010 at 1:58 pm #907930Prob just Tuckner looking for lunch. He has been known to scoop up a few floaters for the steamer!

jeff_hubertyInactivePosts: 4941November 4, 2010 at 4:56 pm #907968There once was a Fable about a little boy who cried wolf.
I was at a DNR seminar about delisting wolves about ten years back. At that time the MN DNR acknowledged there was a known active Wolf pack as close as Hinkley MN.
I have no doubts about wolves being close to the metro area.

November 4, 2010 at 5:30 pm #907980I’ve seen coyotes north of Mora, but have yet to see a wolf. However, I have hear some weird arse howling going on up there at night. And no, I am not trying to make a joke either.
