Cell phone service

My company was recently bought out by ATT. I’m told they use a high baud rate which gives excellent coverage as long as you are near a tower. Venture off into the boonies and service goes in the dumper. I currently have national coverage on two phones and am very pleased with the service, which of course is ending.

Who gives good service in the Rainy River area – Baudette to International Falls? Does ATT do OK there or do I need to look for another carrier?

Thanks for any help. They don’t let you try their phones before signing your life away for two years.

I can’t comment about AT&T up in the Rainy/LOW area. I can tell you AT&T SUCKS most other places. My mom just dumped her I Phone and went to a Droid with Verizon because she couldn’t get service at home in Grand Rapids or on the road between Grand Rapids and Hibbing. Most places we go hunting in Montana, NoDak, Iowa, and Minnesota DO NOT HAVE AT&T service. However those of us with Verizon usually get good service.

The company I work for extends a 20% discount for ATT phones, accessories and service so I took a look at the coverage map to see about switching from US Cellular in hopes of saving money, but the service looks spotty at best.

I may be wrong , but I believe Verizon bought out Alltel and now ATT bought out Verizon, But I think they also have the rights to all the towers, so it may not be such a bad thing and actually improve in service if that is the case, MORE towers to bounce off of for one service.

I wish it was that cut and dry. Each company bought “AREAS”. Not complete buy outs. I know the Verizon/Alltel deal did not affect Southern MN. Same thing with AT&T. Currently, AT&T coverage stinks up on the Range.

I have a cell phone through my company, the contract is with Nextel. It doesn’t work worth a darn in the Northern part of the state. If I’m up on 4 mile bay and the boss is trying to call me and ….uhhhh….never mind.

AT&T did not buy out Verizon, trust me on that one. They may have bought licenses from Verizon for RSAs that they hadn’t built out, but that’s just buying rights to build out service in that service area. They also may have bought an area that Verizon had already built out, but that’s doubtful. AT&T is GSM and Verizon is CDMA. Different technologies so it would make no sense for them to buy an area built out already because they could only use it to provide roaming service to other CDMA carriers without building out a GSM overlay.

Verizon did buy out Alltel about 4 years ago. Since they were both CDMA, Verizon kept all the Alltel areas where they didn’t have service already and sold off the stuff the FCC told them they couldn’t keep.

From experience I can tell you that I have found Verizion to have the best coverage of the providers I have used. T mobile, Verizion, att and nextell being the worst. If I remember my buddies sprint is not horrible but like I said, of all the providers I have used VZ has been the most consistant and reliable. LOTW to Wyoming.

Of all the folks I’ve taken out into the back waters…

Verision always seems to have service.
Sprint- most of the time (service at Wigwam)
others…maybe most of the time…maybe not.

I have Tmobil. Weak signal at best.
And does not work while sturgeon fishing on LOTWs.

Sounds more like a Minnesota love story than a fairy tale.
