What’s wrong in Red Wing?

Long story short. Why is Red Wing so uninviting feeling at night?

We came into town Saturday night hoping to find a nice hotel and stay over but we were shocked to find a dark, uninviting town!

We found a couple hotels along the river but getting to them was terrible. Poor signage and very dim lit roads took all the fun out of it. Then we get into a Motel 8 and find two abandoned cars in the lot! Once inside the deskman was so un-friendly I left. Went across the lot to another and guess what? Same darn thing!

We were really dissapointed by this and ended up driving back home with ornery kids. Maybe we were expecting too much, I dunno.

But gosh are street lights, signs, and friendly people really too much to expect?

I’m not trying to beat up on any folks from Red Wing but hoping to find out we were in the wrong area. Maybe at least let locals know what an outsider felt like.

My co-worker said I should have gone out by the casino as it would have been better. I didn’t know there was a casino for starters, but the hotels I mentioned wanted $75.00/night. I couldn’t imagine what a cleaner hotel would have wanted.

I’d still like to visit the area so if you know of any reasonable hotels with a pool please let me know. Again, I’m not looking to bash anyone but hoping for better information than I found on my own.

I have been going to this area for about 6 years
and always stay in the Lake City area cause I have
the same impression of Red Wing as you do. Try Lake
City or try Camp Lacupolis just south of Lake City
it has excellant accomadations and is ran by very nice people.

Other than Evert’s, the only place to stay in Red Wing is the Days Inn near Colvill Park.
Sunset Motel in Lake City is very family/fisherman friendly with easy paking for boats and trailers. The Americ Inn in Lake City is also nice. Great food in Lake City too! Try Port of Call or The Watermans.

well thanks for not filleting me for this question. It really seems odd that such a popular city would be so dank feeling.

We went through Lake City twice that day and it seems to be a very nice town, almost stayed there that night.

Soon as the walleye fishing picks up in the lake this spring I will be heading to Lake City to try to figure out where to catch them in the lake.

    Thanks again folks!

    Big B,

Waterman’s is now the Skyline, different owners. I don’t think the food is as good now. The Port has great food… another good resturant in LC is Bronks, it’s right downtown on the main drag.

Not sure what happened on your visit, I have never stayed actually in the town of Red Wing.
I would suggest that you stay at Everts Resort. They are a great bunch of people and you are right where you want to be for the spring fishing.
If the Casino is more to your liking it is Treasure Island Casino and I have stayed there a few times as well, clean and very friendly and really not unreasonably priced. They are on pool 3 so you would have to lock through or trailer down to Red Wing from there.

    C Wurst:
    Your right!! Bronks is great
We often stop there when we get off the water a little late.

I think I’ve been in Watermans since it changed hands, I thought it was good but sometimes by that time of night food is secondary
We also shouldn’t forget to mention the galley for excellent breakfast

All that being said, Lake City is a great town and only fifteen miles from Red Wing

In December we stayed at http://www.willowsontheriver.com/ in Lake City. Cost is not bad for Nov -March. It was one of the best places we have ever stayed at. If you bring your wife, she may never want to leave. The view of the lake is outstanding, plus you have a gas fireplace, kitchen and other stuff.
