When my furnace kicks on I get a strong sewer gas smell that comes out of one vent. Every other vent in the house is fine. Any ideas?

It smells exactly like it would if I took the cap off my septic tank.

Maybe a vent pipe was run threw a vent some where. Do you get the smell from all the vents or just one. Have you ever had the ducts cleaned?

It is only coming out of one vent, however if I reach down the duct I can feel it branches off maybe twice. No we have never had them cleaned.

from time to time my house starts to smell like that I put some water in the floor drain that is next to the furnance. Not really sure about only smelling it from one vent?

Forgot to mention, stop sniffing your septic tank. There is poo in there.

Maybe try sticking the under water camera down the vent and seeing whats down there. Why is it that sewer line cameras are thousands of dollars and Marcums are only a fraction of that?

It might very well be gas, both lp and natural have a smell added for saftey purposes. It might be a good idea to have your furnace cleaned and inspected. Might cost a little bit but beats the hell out of waking up dead.

I’m with you on that Abra. I’d check it out. Propane leaks smell a lot like Septic. Thus was wondering if you by chance heated with Propane or gas.

I should add that it is not all the time. Just every once in awhile.

I did that once, I’ll never do it again.

At a minimum, get a Co2 detector for sure. Probably have one already… also a friendly reminder…check those fire alarm batteries and extinguishers Heating season coming up

The water in an unused drain will evaporate and that will let a sewer gas smell out. Pour some water down any drains not used regularlly.

Check what dslars and buck slayer mentioned. I would think that would create the smell from all of the vents but you never know. Evaporated drains would definitely cause the smell you are describing.

If the drain smells, pour some water down it and problem solved.

Might want a CO (carbon monoxide) detector instead of a CO2 (carbon dioxide) detector.
