    Hello Everyone,

Just thought I would update everyone on the progress my Service Dog in Training is making. He is now almost 19 months old and is constantly training and learning new behaviors. Some of his favorites are turning lights on and off, opening and closing cupboards doors and the fridge. I know someone will ask- Yes he does know how to get a beer from the lower shelf in the fridge. He aslo gets my 2 kids undressed every night. He can’t walk by an hadicapped door without hitting the switch with either his paw ir his nose. A big part of his training is always being calm and in control. One of his main duties is to pick up items and bring them back or put them somewhere we tell him to. For instance I can tell him to get my wife cell phone and then give him the command “put”, he will them put it where ever we tell him to, on a counter, table, etc… His favorite is to put it in her purse. He mastered a difficult behavior this past weekend. He is able to pick up a dime off a hard wood floor and return it to my hand in his from gums. This is amazing to me because I have trouble pick up dimes off the floor. With a year to go he will continue to learn many more complex behaviors before graduation. As before if any IDA’ers out there lead any sort of youth groups and would like Hudson to come by for a demo, shoot me a PM and if we can swing it he would be more than happy to come by. I will post another update in a couple of months.

    Thanks,

    John

Fantastic! I can truly appreciate the work that you have put into training Hudson.

Was he bred specifically to be a service dog?

Congratulations on performing such a selfless duty.

Flat-out cool. Our Floyd is a certified therapy dog, but training a service dog is leaps and bounds above that.

Thanks for the nice reply Tim- Although this is a lot of work and we are not paid this is all volunteer time, it is well worth it. The joy you get when the dog learns a new difficult comand is unreal. Hudson if he graduates will end up with someone in a motorized wheelchair. He will become the quarterback of their life. In all cases these dogs competely change a persons life. Although it will be tough to say goodbye after 3 years we already look forward to getting another one and start from scratch again.

If you have kids and they want to see the big guy in action let me know

    John,
What kind of training do you have to go through before training a service dog?

How young of a kid does it have to be?

BK- You are young enough. Hudson is always willing to work for anyone. Even guys that fish for weird looking fish. Sorry Ralph That was not directed towards you- Just BK.

I would love to see that… maybe we should have some sort of late-season IDO outing/picnic and Hudson can come and be our Celebrity of the Day…

    So… pot-luck at Everts?
