    Just bought a new laptop.

My computer guy states I should try Microsoft Security Essentials for Virus Protection.
Anyone have any experience with this program?

    Thanks, Mike

it integrates in with windows really well. it isn’t a resource hog. and its free. one of the best out there.

I installed this on my PC and laptop at home about 2 months ago and no problems so far.

I was told to make sure you don’t have any other virus protection on the computer so they would not conflict with each other. The issue is that some downloads try to tag on Norton or other protection software so I have been watching for these more lately.

I used to run McAfee but got tired of paying the bills. This one seems to be working just fine for me.

    Good luck.

Yup, been using it for about a year now, dumped avg because it was getting to the resource hog point.

I agree. While I used to use AVG Free, it didn’t seem to catch everything and used a ton of resources. MS Security Essentials is free, updates itself frequently, and catches just about everything.

    A surprisingly good product!

Overall its a pretty good free Antivirus. Also you should look at Comodo Firewall, ranked up in the free firewalls. Lets you know whats going in and out, vice versa.

Another one I like is WOT, Web of Trust, lets you know good/bad websites. Google both of these, good free additions.

Beyond that you should be set.

Been using it for a month or so. My only complaints so far are:
    1. It does not always update itself if you have Windows update set to anything other than “Install updates automatically”
    2. A restore point is created after every update so these can accumulate rapidly.
Otherwise seems to be a great and free product.

I agree, seems to be a good product. I’m sure it’s “free” days are coming to an end.
