I have a friend who has a 98 Johnson that is very hard to start the first time out if not ran for over two weeks. Once started it runs fine and starts right up till it sets awhile again.
Sorry its a fast strike 150. I did notice that it starts with a lot of smoke, like excess oil.
He has already replaced the fuel line, and primer bulb. Also checked the line from inside the tank. The shop had replaced the spark packs also.
    Any ideas?
As always any and all help will be appreciated.

    Thank You Stonecutter

Seem like when yamaha’s do things similar to this it’s time for their low pressure fuel pumps to be replaced. I can’t really say anything for Johnson, I’m not really familar with their motors.

I have no experience with the bigger motors, but sounds like a possible carb problem. Have the carbs ever been cleaned on this one?

Viagra-ha-I love it! Reminds me of a hard starting carbed Yammi I had one time, did the same thing. What I discovered is that if it was going to set for a while was to run it dry before I shut it off. I figured the old gas was causing problems and when I pumped in fresh gas, it popped right off. Just something from my FWIW dept jerr

My Johnson outboard is cold blooded like that too. I find it helps to run premium gas in it and to lean up the mixture a tad. The plugs need to be cleaned or replaced fairly often if they sit for a week or more between trips.

Is he squeezing the primer bulb before he trys to start it? I have a 99 Merc and after it sits for a week or two, it also starts hard unless I squeeze the bulb first.

Hear is a tip! If you have an oil tank that is mounted on the engine, it seems the the oil will leak down into the gas line when parked for a time(two weeks or over winter) So if the gas line is full of oil, it is hard to start the first time and you get a lot of smoke when the $#&&%$ thing starts, but then runs great and starts good the rest of the day. So, disconnect the fuel line and squeeze the primer bulb to clear the fuel line of accumulated oil. I use the part off an old motor that my fuel line clips on and can pump out the gas buy using the squeeze bulb. Easy on some motors, not easy on others. Hope this helps!

I am not trying to be a smart a$$….but does he pump the gas line bulb until solid *before* trying to start it? I have an ’89 110 and it is a must to do this before starting. If I do it, it pops off on the first or second turn of the key. If I don’t, I am fiddling with the choke for a while…Just a sug.
