I have an old jeep that I considered giving to scrap, I contacted a couple of junk yards for interest but never commited to anything. When I arrived home from work tonight the jeep had been towed from my driveway leaving tire marks and digging up my front lawn. After contacting the police about a stolen vehicle it was found at a yard near me but hasn’t been touched as far as parting out or anything, the people at the yard are gone for the day and I’m supposed to call tomorrow. Where do I stand here? Do I rant and rave about it being removed without permission, or do I just be calm nice and setle for a price? I feel really stupid about notifying the police but at the same time I thought it had been stolen, once again I didn’t give anyone permission to remove this from my driveway I still have the keys and title in my hands, just curious as to how others would handle this, what would you do?

I myself would consider it stolen and press charges.

They NEVER should have removed the vehicle without your permission and pay for damages to the yard. I would rant and rave if they didnt commit to coming and getting it.

By Mn state law they will need title to even just crush it.

They should have made arrangements to pick it up and that jeep is worth around $125-$150 as junk weight.

Let us know how it turns out

You say “you thought it was stolen”????? well it was. It was stolen off you lawn and they trashed your yard in the process and you want to barter with them???? Where do you stand here? you stand to be a victim if you dont do anything about it. Why is it still over there? Obviously from my user name I am a little biased but something aint right here. catch em and bag em.

It sounds to me like there might be two sides to the story. Is it possible that somebody on the other end got a different interpretation of your discussions, or could they have taken notes and somebody else read them and made a bad call? I’d call them first and see what their story is. Usually there are three sides to every story with the third being in the middle…….

Question: if they called you and talked about a deal but it wasn’t complete, and you drove to their boneyard and took something, what do you think they would do? I say call the police, file a police report and declare it as stolen.

2x. I would be very offended if anything was stolen from my property. Reguardless of what it was…if they get away with taking the old jeep this time, they’ll take the new jeep next time
Ask the DA what the fines are for criminal tresspass and for auto theft. That would be the new price tag of the old jeep they just stole…let them decide
ps: great story, let us know what you end up doing.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here. I’m assuming you gave them your address right? It could be just an honest mistake in that another yard employee towed your vehicle not knowing the whole situation or got confused about what he/she was supposed to do. Hear them out and see why they towed your vehicle. If you’re satisfied with the reasoning behind it, then negotiate a fair price and hopefully all parties will end up happy.

If you’re not satisfied with their answer, then it’s up to you to determine if you just want them to tow your vehicle back or press charges.

X2… obviously they knew where it was…. I doubt that stealing scrap cars is a hobby of theirs, I don’t think they would be in business very long. Did the cops locate the Jeep ? How did you find out where it was ??? This is very weird….????

On another note… it looks like most here would take the big hard a88 approach …

Even if it was an honest mistake on their part being they may have read the notes wrong, They should have no reason to leave tire marks on the driveway and tore up the yard. make em pay!

I guess my question is why did any of the scrapyards have your address if you were just checking around on prices?

If you gave them your address and bartered with them on a price I can see it being mis-read by the truck driver that got the note.

If you didnt give them the address and never spoken anything along the lines of agreeing with them on a price and to come pick it up, go after them.

Either way I would ask for the damages to the yard and such on top of the price of the jeep.

I think we need more details about things to come to a logical conclusion.

Yes, when I first spoke with the salvage yard, I gave them my address, I was asked where I lived, if it was out of their range it would be no deal, I gave them that info willingly. I also gave them my phone number, nothing else….nothing, on a foot note, the salvage yard didn’t leave me a note, phone message, after removing the jeep,or contact me since our first conversation over a week ago they just removed the jeep. I’ve calmed down since I got home but now have more questions than answers, the Police in a nearby town located the jeep and contacted me with the info, thank you officers for your quick thinking and involvement. I called the yard on first instinct when I got home tonight and got a recording with no immediate response, when I called again approx. 30 mins later, I got the recorder again, the Police advised me it was closed and to call tomorrow, like myself everyone will have to wait until tomorrow for the ending results, I will be sure to poat a response however it turns out. Wow. Very shady….A week after your only call?
I’ve given one car up to salvage that I had to leave at a gas station when it died. I called around and found a salvage yard that was willing to pick it up, as long as I signed off on the title, title was inside the vehicle and the keys inside. No title, they won’t touch it. They made it very clear on the phone before they drove 40 miles that those conditions were met.

I misread your original post…I thought you were saying the police found it in ‘somebodies yard’ but they actually found it in the ‘junk yard’?
In that case it could me a major miscommunication but I would still be alittle miffed about that and the yard.
Hope you get it worked out!

X2…. Get your Jeep back,Make them pay for the yard and then don’t let them have the Jeep! I don’t know how it works with scrapping cars, But when you sell a car,You exchange the key and title with the buyer. They don’t just come and take it at their leisure! STOLEN!

Exactly. Unless you said come pick it up and I’ll drop the title off and we can exchange money later. Doesn’t sound like that happened. However, I would not file charges until I first talked to the yard. I have a hard time believing they would be so brazen to just go steal it when it wouldn’t be hard to track down. All the police had to do was visit the yards you talked to.

That being said, if they didn’t own up and offer to pay for damages above a good price for the jeep, I’d go straight to the police and file. They were obviously very irresponsible at the very least. If I owned a yard, I wouldn’t take a vehicle without having the title. Never.

If you are asking why, you haven’t read any of the previous posts or you own a junk yard and just picked up a jeep the other day.

I would first find out if it was an honest mistake (I bet it was). Then treat them exactly how you would want to be treated if you made the same mistake.
