My battery on my 25hp evinrude died yesterday while fishing. Should I get a 6amp or 2amp battery? And it must be 12volts right,?

Given the choices you listed, 6 amp. It would charge your battery faster and not be a burden on any typical home AC outlet.

Are there better choices than a 6 amp?

Go to WalMart and get the EverStart Battery charger. If I remember right mine was under 30 bucks. There is three settings you can select for what amps you want to charge at. I always charge at 10amps. There is a booster which has came in handy for my truck once.

I have had mine going on 5 years with no troubles. It was worth the money. Chargers can get pricy!!

They keep going up in amperage. The choices are endless. Unless you plan on fishing consecutive days often get something affordable in the amp range you mention. Make sure it is fully automatic to safeguard from overcharging. I just bought a nice sealed unit by Guest for my small fishing boat. It’s waterproof so I an leave it in the boat. 6 amp so charge time is adequate and it cost just under $100.

Here you go. This is the next step up from mine which has the options of 2amp 10amp and 75amp.

I agree with Bret…but when I know the boat wont be use for a few days I will charge at 2amps, the lower amperage rate will give you a deeper charge and it doesnt matter weather you are charging a start battery or deep cycle battery.

many of the chargers are switchable, from 2amp to ?6amp? to booster. I’ve gone with these and used the slowest i’ve got time for. It does matter on battery longevity i’m told as well as depth of charge, at least with lead batteries.

You won’t meet a finer tight wad than myself Get a cheaper multi amp charger for the very few extra ching it will cost for the 6amp. It does not hurt to excite a drained battery and then back off the amperage when charging. You don’t want to build dead spots in a plate.

Being you are from La Crosse, Battery Mart down in muddy flats is another good place to visit, ask what they recommend in your situation and they will steer you right.

If you want to try my cheapy before making a purchase, I’ll meet you in La Crosse dude and give mine a spin

When a battery is dead, sometimes it’s a good idea to booster it to take a charge for a few minutes, then set the charger back to a low amp setting. Any 12 volt charger will do the job, but the cheaper the unit, the more inconsistent it will do the job. The hotter the charger gets, the less efficient it is. The higher the amp charge setting the hotter it will get. Boiling batteries is a surefire way to shorten battery life. The charge setting of 10 amp and below is fine for most batteries. The lower amp setting, the cooler it will charge batteries.
