Forgot the oil…..

I have always been in the habit of adding oil to my gas when I fill my tanks. Sure enough, the one time I didnt do it at the gas station and a few cocktails later, I ran about 3 gallons of un-mixed gas through my motor. Its a 1988 45hp Mercury. I bought it from my buddy who took it out of the crate and between the 2 of us, the motor has run mint, never any problems. Im sick to my stomach….

Anyway, I know the motor still runs, it didnt blow. Im looking for suggestions on what to do next. Compression test, sea foam, mix a gallon of gas with high oil ratio (50/1 normal)?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Id start with a compression test and see what your reading on each cylinder.

Is it running poorly now? Was there still other gas in the tank that was mixed? Did you properly mix your cocktail?

I havnt ran it since…Im looking for suggestions prior to doing so in hopes of limiting potential damage. There was very little gas in the tank, maybe 1/2 gallon.

Good humor on the cocktails – fortunately they can be mixed as lean as necessary.

If it still runs, I would maybe do a compression test…. but more than likely, I would mix up a batch, top off the tank and run it. What’s the worst that can happen ? Either way, you can’t go back….

Mix your gas/oil and run it. You will know if it needs anymore attention.

Drain the carb bowl and lines so the mix is there right away and take it for a ride. Id go easy for 10 min to make sure oil coats the surfaces and get where it needs to.
But like it was stated before, you cant go back. Just do a thurough test drive. If it wasent acting up your probly ok and not too much damage was caused. Comp test is about the only other thing to do, however if oil is lacking from the cyl walls you might get a false reading, not too sure on that though, just a thought. best luck, Mark
