The seminar will be held the night before departure so fishing time isn’t wasted when everyone would rather be out in their boats netting fish! This will give us more time to go through detailed information and get everyone on the right track before the houseboats leave the dock the next morning. This should give guys a chance to make adjustments to equipment, bait or provisions in needed BEFORE we depart.

Chris Granrud, Rainy Lake Fishing Guide, along with input from members of the In-Depth Outdoors Pro Staff, will be conducting a pre-event seminar covering tips, tactics, locations and techniques for catching Rainy Lake walleyes, crappies and northern pike!

A large Rainy Lake map will be on-hand for discussing and sharing specific locations for each target species. Rods rigged with the “hot” bait will be displayed to help each person attending quickly get up to speed on the best presentations. Bring your handheld GPS for entering waypoints OR bring paper and pencil for taking notes as the information shared at this seminar is designed to help you get the most out of your participation in the 2010 Rainy Lake Get Together.

Just curious on the bait keeping setup used by most. Transport them in the bags from the bait shop out to the house boat location? Majority are left at the houseboat site during the day in what? Most people using bait tamers in the boat?

    Thx,
    Raap

    Great question.

The drive from the baitshop to Rainy Lake Houseboats (RLH) is about 10 minutes. Transport from the baitshop to the houseboat in the oxygenated bag.

Once you get to RLH launch your boat and fill your baitwell with water. Transfer your bait to a large bait tamer and place the bait tamer in your livewell.

Your fishing boat will get towed behind the houseboat out to the tie up sites so your bait will stay fresh for the duration.

As for how bait is managed during the stay, there’s two ways to go about that.

    1) – leave the bait in your bait tamer in your livewells / baitwells and leave the fill and recirculation timer on over night. Since your batteries can be charged each evening by plugging into 110 current on the houseboat both your bait and batteries will be in great shape in the AM.

    2) – I built a large floating bait cage that hangs off the back of the houseboat. This cage was made of 1/4” mash and has a closing / locking lid to keep the otters and turtles at bay should they come calling during the night. This cage was large enough to hold 6 – 8 big bait tamers. Our group pulled the Tamers from the baitwells each night and floated them inside the bait cage overnight.

Each method worked well. Last summer we had unusually warm temps and I don’t recall anyone having any major issues keeping bait alive.

I’ve started a private member group to help us finish out the planning for the 2010 Rainy Lake Get Together. Find that here >>> http://www.idofishing.com/groups/view.php?gid=54&page=0

Please request access and spread the word to the others in your group to do the same. I’d like to see everyone checking that forum weekly up to our trip so everyone has all the latest info.

Thanks Ron. That’s what happens when a guy gets in a hurry.
