As I had mentioned in a previous post, I am rebuilding my boat trailer side rails.

Does any one know if I need side marker lights,my trailer had them BUT have never work since I have owned it (6yrs), I dont know the length but it holds a 16′ boat /single axle.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff

    Hey Trumar,

Don’t know if that is accurate. From the MN boating guide (Pg. 48):

    “Lights
Two red taillights, license plate light (not required on trailers with permanent registration) and two red
reflectors are required on all trailers. Signal and brake lamps are recommended on all trailers and
required at night or whenever the signal of the towing
vehicle is not visible to the other drivers. Larger
trailers also require clearance and/or marker lamps.”

put on a couple extra. It never hurts to have to many, and if one gos out the others will keep you legal and on the road.

I love having the side lights at night while driving, I know the trailer is back there but like seeing it too. They are a must have if you do alot of night landing/launching too imho.

I took some pictures on how I wired my LED lights and thought you would like to see how I did it.

After I almost got a ticket one AM on the way to work,,I spent a few hours in the shop elevating mine on the PVC up-rights that are on the sides of the trailer when I got home.
    Like this.

The only two splices (per side) that I do have in my wires are where they will not be under water at all when the trailer is backed into the water.
I have a splice in the wires up by the light and also up by the hitch where it plugs into the truck.
All of them are soldered, liquid elect tape, and then heat shrink tubing finishes it off. I don’t know of a better way to do it……..
