Anyone use short lead core rods?

  • #1268591

    Hey Guys,

I see Cabelas has some short 5′ lead core rods clearanced out, and I was thinking of picking a couple up.

I figure I might not use these very often, but they would be nice to have from time to time, especially when your looking to get more than 4 lines out…

My question, is, how many of you guys use short lead core rods from time to time? Are they worth the investment in your opinion?

    Thanks in advance.

I only run 2 cores at a time and use 2 piece 6′ rods. I prefer them over longer ones…as they seem easier to manage and when broken down, they fit in the rod storage very easily.

I’ve been known to run two 5′ (shorties) and two 9’6″ leadcore rods at one time. The 5′ shorties are a nice option to run and keep lines from tangling.

Yup, have a set from Dean, i do use these often. If you’re in the market, take a set of pergrines out for try.

I have a couple.. They are nice to be able to get 6 lines out in Wis. I have landed some big fish on those rods, just make sure you have your drags set well. Hard to go wrong for 20 bones…

    Get them!

My spread for Pepin is 2 Depthmaster shorties and 2 9’6″ Mr. Walleye rods. It works well as long as the crankbaits are running true. Like Lester said keep the drag loose. I’ve landed some nice fish, but I’ve also had a couple break off or come undone as well.

I also use my shorties quite a bit to tune baits. I get a little antsy sometimes when I’m only trolling 2 lines, so I take the shorty out and tune crankbaits between fish.

Guess I’ll have to pick a couple up. Thanks for the replies!

On a side note, how many of you guys have all your trolling rods and reels set up and designated for specific purposes?

I’ve found lately that for me, its alot easier for both storage and purpose wise to keep my reels in a reel bag, rods in side storage and put them on certain rods as needed… Anyone else do this with their trolling setups???

I have two set up for core and two set up for hardline—really nice hand holding that short rod when you have to trigger strikes.

I have a 6.5 footer that I consider short. Easier to handle in the boat sometimes.

    I have 2 Cabela’s 5 foot shorties I’ll sell you.
They are only 2 years old, but with about 1/2 a season’s worth of use. Been sitting in the garage unused since I changed them out. Shoot me a PM if you like and we can talk.

I use those exact rods about every time off, and they are fantastic. I can’t believe they’re on sale for $15. Wait, yes I can…I just bought one.

They are the rods we catch a lot of our saugers and walleyes on, and they work great. Thinkin I might have to get one as an extra for only $15.

I have 2 Jason Mitchells from Everts.Loved them till I went to Takotas. The reel seat is too small to take accept them. Can’t believe how well a 5′ rod handles a large fish.I have 2 Cabelas 8’6”trolling rods, don’t think much of the action but shortie might be fine.$15 is pretty cheap to try.Cabelas is good about returns if you don’t like.Or for that price you can stake tomato plants

My favoite leadcore trolling rods are the Peregrine 5 ft. Superline/leadcore trolling rods that were bought at Everts Resort on pool 4, Cabela’s 6.6 ft. DepthMaster trolling series rods, and for longer rods I use Diawa 10.6 ft. Heartland Downrigger rods. I have 2 of each with the exception of have 3 of the Cabelas rods. My favorites are the 5 ft and the 6.6 ft rods mentioned above. My favorite leadcore line is the 18# Cabelas brand. Be sure and let us know what rods and line you decide to go with and how you like them.
    Thanks, Bill
