I suppose, I hadn’t really thought of it that way. I’m still smarting from getting pinched by the Prescott cops for speed postings set up by the WI DoT. Another case of “but you still broke the rules”, no matter why. And I will end up paying that particular ticket also… however I’m still going to a hearing with the city atty to try to get it lowered a bit because the stretch of road in question is CRAZY AS CRAZY CAN BE with the speed zones.

I figure they only way to get though the speed traps in prescott is to do no more than 20, but 15 mph is preferred, all the way though town.
Rumor has it, speed traps are the only income in that town and they do well at taking your money…
But a battery powered back set of lights may be a good idea, considering the lifespan of most boat lights seems to be short anyway..

I’d go the the clerks office and pay the fine in pennies, wait there till they are done counting, thank them for letting you waste their time, just as the County Sherrif wasted your time. Trust me it helps you feel better, I speak form experience.
I would for sure take all my frusterations out on the clerk. It is their fault, and why not ruin a few peoples day since one officer gave you a ticket. It is the clerks fault for sure
No doubt.. I would pay my fine (which I earned) and keep them guessing if I was an azzhole… rather than pay in pennies and remove all doubt….

Here’s the way it works, when you bring a couple bags of coin in, the clerk looks at the supervisor who just throws up her hands. Now the supervisor is the county supervisor and if you don’t think that word gets around, you might be misinformed. You can ask there if they are ever any conversations with the county sherrif dept, no doubt they both work for the same entity. We don’t have such a thing as coin counters down here in hicksville, so this works well.
Up here…DNR is a state agency, not county…(not sure on Sconsin)..so we mail our fines to Lafayette Street in St Paul… or drive them there.

there’s no sheriff dept running around in boats?
Yeah the water patrol. They and the DNR COs have a ton of crossover in what they can cite for. Sheriffs can cite for G&F over-limit or licensing issues and DNR COs can cite for things like PDFs, lights, etc.
There are also city water patrols in addition to the county sheriff dept guys. Same deal there.
Interestingly, though, if you get ticketed for anything you actually pay your fines to whichever entity would normally collect them. DNR infractions go to St. Paul and county/city infractions get paid to the county or city regardless of who wrote the ticket.
They make it all so simple and straightforward.

You have some of that backwards. County does not deal with game and fish laws, only CO’s. They will deal with BWI, watercaft licensing, lights, pfd’s and what not. Co’s will deal with everything above and more. I get sick of reading the LE bashing posts so here are my .02 and I’m done. If LE could actually look back into time and see that it went out when you were out there then yes, a warning may have been the right move. If you would hear the excuses we hear day in and day out then you would understand. Luck was not on your side that day because the first person you ran into was an SO boat. Pay the fine and move on…. You were in the wrong. The PFD thing has me confused if you did have an extra regular PFD on board. But remember the inflatables are not legal if they are not worn. For all the people who can sit here and bash LE for doing their jobs is unreal. Ok, I’m still mad but done.

Dude, I never meant to be bashing on LE, at least not in this post. All I meant to say is that it can all be confusing.
One question, though… if county/city doesn’t deal with G&F infractions in MN then why do Brooklyn Center and 3 Rivers cops regularly check my license, bait and bait bucket fishing around my home up here in the NW metro? I don’t recall having my license checked by a sheriff, but by city/TRPD for sure.
Are there some limited enforcement accords between the various LE groups in the state?
If three rivers is a park area they may have some juristiction there, not sure what three rivers is. Otherwise I quess I’m not sure why a local pd would check a fishing license. May be a special parks unit they have…….and yes I said unit.
DT
Three Rivers Park District… they have jurisdiction over thousands of acres of park area up here. Plus they have their own dedicated PD. I’m a bit bitter over the $175 fine they want me to pay because nobody put up a sign that said “Boat Launch – $5” at one of their parks. Feels a lot like a trap to me. I have a hearing on that one coming up.
It’s that sort of thing that leaves a guy feeling like bashing LE based on what I call, after years in the tech world, “The Law of the Most Obvious Target”. I know it’s not their fault, but who else to rip on? Enforcers are always the ones who take the hit for the guys who make the rules.
As for the Brooklyn Center PD, they must have some limited arrangement with the DNR in this part of the Twin Cities metro, because they check licenses at all the fishing piers. And a few miles away up in Coon Rapids, at Coon Rapids Dam County Park, both park police and city cops, as well as DNR, check licenses.
Maybe cus the DNR is spread too thin up here they have special arrangements or something?
Anyway… I’ll admit that there are most definitely proper avenues of protest. In fact I’m taking 2 of them in August, one in Prescott and one here in Brooklyn Center over the park boat-launch incident. And I freely admit that the cops are the messengers, and the relevant old adage is especially true in this case since the messenger can shoot back!
