    Hwy 82 bridge connecting Iowa to the promise land (WI) is CLOSED. A barge struck the footings this afternoon.

    Sure isn’t the first time and prolly not the last. Might not be a bad idea for them to install another dolphin on the Iowa side.
    Usually happens when they get in too big a hurry!
    But it’s a bad curve to begin with. Use to sit at my grandparents house and watch barges jackknife the boat houses just north of there before you get to the marina.

    Here is a link with some pictures. Sounds like it did not hit the bridge yet but they are worried about moving it due to some damage on the barge from hitting the dolphin. My mom and dad saw it and said they have never seen anything like it before.

    One got the dolphin a couple weeks ago also. Had its nose on the Iowa bank. Took him about an hour to get backed out.

    What is a dolphin as it pertains to the bridge? No pictures of the mammal dolphin needed. I know what they are.

    A large barrel type structure filled with sand and topped with cement anchored INTO the river bottom. Built to protect the bridge piers from runaway barges and asleep at the wheel tow pilots.

    I could see how that might be fun coming around that corner and getting a stiff north wind. How in the hell does one get to Sweeny’s now? Now, I’ll have to pay more for gas when I go there.

    I do believe the bridge was re-opened this AM too but didn’t drive over to check it out. The sheriff wasn’t sitting on the WI side blocking Hwy 82 and the road closed warning sign up at the Shaddy Maple parking lot near LaCrosse was shut off.

    Have always heard it’s one of the toughest turns for barges to address from the Cities down to StL. Lot of current whipping through the chute into that corner.

    that corner or the one up hear in Red Wing. Which is almost a U; I have been told ours is the tightest corners
