Hey all – it seems my C/A has picked the best time to quit pumping cold air. Anyone know of a good company in the north metro (I live in Coon Rapids) or is there anything I can do myself to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

There may be a control board inside the indoor unit that will flash a service code. The codes can be found in the owners manual or on the back of the panel you have to remove. Make sure the condenser is not plugged up. You can take the hose to it but avoid the wiring where possible.

Joel Smith heating and air is located on bunker lake rd just north of you. They are a local family owned company. Joel likes to fish to. They should be easy to find on line.

Check/change filter, take a glance at the “A” coil if you can see them, (I can’t easily on mine) if they are one giant frozen mass, turn the a/c off and let it defrost, probably low on freon, and the a/c will work until it freeze again. If you can see the coil you can turn it off and see if you get a bunch of water after it’s been off some time, telling you the coil is frozen. Also make sure the a/c fins on the unit outside are pretty much clean and free of fuzz and dirt, you can carefully wash it, if it’s a mess, but the fins are easy to bend and mess up if you use too much water pressure and always try to shoot directly into the fins and not at an angle, be very careful. If they are really bad they make professional product to clean the fins, not sure how to go about getting it though….

Anything beyond that I’m calling out.

Don’t know if you have a saver switch, not sure they would’ve cycled your air, small chance that is you issue, You house wouldn’t get too hot even if they did cycle the air, You probably have Xcel, and they rarely use them….

( MUCH unlike Dakota electric (which I’m certain you don’t have as long as you location is correct ) They cycle their A/C all the time and as far as I know anytime, well past 10pm… Don’t get me started. I don’t have one anymore anyways )

You’re probably low on “Freon”, call a professional and have it serviced……..

If its frozen let it thaw and clean all fans, coils, filters and drains. At 80 dollars an hour and the expensive chemicals they use you can save a heap of money. If you are mechanicly inclined its pretty easy to do. This is a much more common problem than being low on refrigerant. From a cost saving view point I would start there. Ofcourse it could be something else but cleaning it up means the tech. doesn’t have to so your saving money either way.
