Rick Stawski actually trained my dog (he had 6 or 7 weeks with him in total) and he had an e-collar on him well before his he turned a year old. The comment about the collar being there to reinforce the command rather than punish the dog is 100% right on in my experience. Rick is awesome. I haven’t seen his DVD but I would bet it’s fantastic.

Rick’s Fowl Dawg series is a GREAT training program for a novice. it will take you all the way from a puppy to finish work.

I also have trained with Rick at his grounds in Milaca, and the guy is as first class as they come. and he works wonders with young dogs, that is his specialty.

I do the hunt test games, and i by no means am a pro trainer, nor is my dog the best on the truck. but, i’m around enough experienced trainers and handlers, to see what works, and what methods are being used today. someone mentioned Wolters’ training material, and it by no means is bad, but there are better, easier ways to train dogs today. its like using an old Eagle Fishmark graph in the boat. will it help you, and show you depth and fish? YES but it will not be as helpful or efficient as a new color graph with built in gps and mapping capabilities.

just my $.02 on this is all. hopefully through all my ranting and raving you pick up a little bit of helpful info.

FWIW imho if you think you need a shock collar, you shouldn’t be training dogs.

4 dogs, multiple obedience and field degree’s, and no shock collar needed.
Only as a last resort and only by a very skilled trainer.

    Al…just another opinion..

and exactly what “Field Degrees” have you put on your dogs without the use of an E-collar?

and it is called an E-Collar, not a shock collar.

when you are teaching long distance handling, blinds, etc, you need a way to make a correction on a known command at a long distance, yelling just ain’t gonna cut it.

again, an E-collar is used to reinforce known commands, not teach commands.

CD and CDX degree’s, in fact the entire Springer club we belonged too did it also..with no shock collar, call it what it is, not some feel good term.

Other than last resort, laziness is what makes these so popular.

And to suggest one to a beginner is just plain stupid.

hmmm…i guess that people who train their dogs to AKC/HRC Hunt Test Titles, and AKC Field Trial AFC/FC titles are lazy then…

oh, and a CD and CDX titles are OBEDIENCE titles… not “Field Titles”

Yes, your right, it should have been WD and WDX, along with the obedience degree’s, and you’ve put what on your dogs???

professional trainers use them because they’re quicker, not because they’re better…time is money.imho

I I still stand on anybody recommending them to a beginner is far from being a competent trainer.

Make fun all you want, but I’m wondering what your skills are with dog training, other than being a smart a$$.

I have a 4.5 yr yellow lab that still has some jumping problems when she gets excited. It takes time and a lot of patience, it won’t happen over night. Lots of good suggestions here. However I would stick to three (2) basic commands. Sit….Stay….Enough… Drill these into her mind, make sure she knows your the alpha dog in the family. I got my lab fixed at 8 months, calmed her down as well.

    Good Luck.

No need to get into a pissing match here guys. James asked for ideas for a couple of issues he has with his pup. Like mentioned above there are some good suggestions here. It is however b.s. to have to read through the e-collar debate. Use em don’t use thats fine. I use them with my dogs and if the customer wants, I train their dog with them. 99.9% of the dogs I train are going to be used in the field. We get into situations where the dog is out of voice command range and even out of whistle command. We can use tone for comeback or direction change ect. Is their situations that we use shock, yes. But I can also tell you that I have hunted multiple dogs all day and used nothing but tone.
Now to say trainers use it as short cut to make bucks is a stretch. Maybe some do but the ones I know don’t. The dogs they train in fact must be solid on obedience on a leash and checkcord. Then and only then will they introduce the collar.
Another thing I would call b.s. on is one study that claims the dogs are more stressed and/or frightened when trained with a collar. Every dog has a varying of level of pressure they will accept. Thats leash, voice or collar pressure. I have trained highwired and skiddish dogs, even dogs that have been incorrectly trained and collar shy. At the end every dog was bolder and confident in performing the tasks at hand.

oh, and no “competent trainer” uses an e-collar to “teach” the dogs. maybe you need to step back and look at what you consider competent training…

What I “need” to do is apologize to the OP for dragging this OT and ignore your ramblings.
