Right Allen, I gave 3 price scenarios I address regularly. I am betting a Million dollars, whatever business your in, I can find a lower price somewhere for the exact service than what you would charge. Can I then trash talk you all over the place on a site full of your potential clients, without even talking to you ??? This is what happened. Plain and simple. Wrong in my opinion.

The main theme anyone should get out of his post is nelsons charged almost three times another professional shop did and to be aware of this.
You can walk around this all you want, and making comments about three bids don’t mean squat, we’re dealing cost to repair a specific item, not having his buddy do it, not going online for parts, he’s talking about a professional boat shop doing it…

Point I and anybody should take is…Nelsons is much higher priced than LaCannes and next time go to LaCannes.

How much would have Lecannes charged for diagnosing the problem which Nelson did? The quote from Lecannes was knowing the problem going in…Lets add a modest $50 there along with $45 for gas round trip or $90 if you had to leave the rig and come back and get it. So you would still be saving 100 give or take. Now is that worth the “your” driving time?

Anywho I’ve done some quick research and although Nelson was the highest priced for the work they weren’t that far `out of line from some of the other dealers here in the metro who have a much higher cost of doing business then some of the outstate business’s have.

The part mark-up may be bit much but A simple call could have made it much better for you and with time saved it may have been close to a wash overall.

I just found a guy in Garrison who is going to fix my upper and lower ball joints on my Tahoe for $200 Cash “labor”…

Can you beat that price Big G…

    I’m with you on this.
Any type of service work goes through the same thing. It takes time to find the problem.

    Time is money

The time it takes to look for a problem is never involved when a customer goes out and gets a bid from another company after the job is already done.

I’m not knocking the place that fixed the gear nor am I agreeing with the cost but to shoot this trouble would have taken anyone 2 minutes at most. Pop the cowling and hit the starter. That is all it takes to trouble shoot this problem.
Just another quick bit of information, not a slam to anyone.

90% of the time you can tell this problem from the sound it makes. I think its safe to say time wasn’t a factor. On another note the internet is the perfect place for this post. They ripped you off, spread the word, maybe they will treat people fairly next time maybe not. Word of mouth is for bad buisness also.

Totally agree…but I guess I would use another tactic and talk to the manager of Nelsons. If I got nowhere, then they are fair game. If I am the only one that can see this, then I guess it’s must be the way I was brought up. Talk to the head, not the azz….. Had this post said, I talked to the manager of Nelsons, they said pound sand, then blast the internet. I see no problem with someone giving you a quote and charging the said price. If you have a problem with it, it should be before you “agree” to pay the price ???? What is this world coming too, when that is a problem ??? Or at the least, Nelsons problem ??? Did they do the work without your approval ??? Did you expect them to tell you that somewhere else was cheaper ???
At the least, this post should say something like this, I went to Nelsons, got a diag & quote for a Bendix, they did the work, for said amount. Where I failed myself, was not shopping around, not their problem, but mine. Maybe I should call them & inquire why my work was so much more than another place ??? Is the part gold plated ?

I agree G! They should get the opportunity to defend their charges, and make it right if it should be made right. If they don’t, blast away. They should get one opportunity to right a wrong.

    Holy smokes!

My intent here wasn’t to create a huge dust-up — like I said, I was just feeling frustrated for what appears to be a gross mis-overbilling.

But truley thanks to the people telling me to “get off my [censored] and call them” (nicely) — I called this morning and am in the process of verifying part numbers and pricing with them.

It sounds like they are willing to at least investigate the billing with me so +1 for them for now.

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Regardless of how easy the diagnose was or is there is still a minimum fee in the real world for these things.
Usually it’s closer to $100 so $50 is not outrageous.

Go to a Car Dealership with a check engine light and for $100 they’ll tell that you didn’t turn your gas another click and it set Evap code…

My 4×4 was kicking on, no reason at speed on the interstate. I was told by the Ford dealership, $130.00 up front just to diagnose. I wasn’t happy, but at least they were honest and I knew it going in. $500.00 bill later I’m back running down the interstate full tilt.

Like the sign behind the counter in the diner says: “If you like the food, tell others. If you don’t like the food, tell me.”
