Bulk Propane Re-Fill Issue

I’ve got a 40# bulk tank and bought an adapter that I thought would allow me to use the little 1# cans on each latern/stove etc.

Directions say to screw all the tanks together, turn it up-side down, and open the big tank.

All the bottles attached appropriately seemingly, but when opened up-side down, no propane goes into the little bottles…

    Any experience here??

My understanding is the new bottles won’t dispence liquid anymore, our govt keeping us safe again.

Try freezing the 1 lbs overnight and leave the 40 lb outside to stay warm. Connect them together and flip upside down before turning on the valve. I’ve filled quite a few this way with no issues.

I think i want to fill it upside down so it fills with liquid???

I’ll try the frozen trick. It’s a shame that I threw away all my extra cans that I accumulated at the campground this weekend!!! I’ll have to use up one around the house making coffee this week to proof the system!!

I got curious and checked with one of the guys who works with them tanks alot.

He believes any of the cyclinders with the overfill protection will probably not let liquid out when the tank is upside down.
Not sure if all the new tanks have that or just a few.

The older tanks would though, least mine did.

Might try here for some more info.

if all hooked and flipped upside down then open valve there should have been some transfer unless the #40 does have a safety I am unaware of. On #20s it works fine.

To top them off you have to get a small needle nose and pull what looks like an internal tire valve to bleed some pressure out. Careful its cold, wear a glove.

I have heard there is a difference between the 20#ers and the 40#ers…

I have one and only have luck with freezing the one pound tank. If you leave just a little in it just screw on the transfer couple this will bleed the one pound tank this will freeze it then quick hook up to bigger tank, flip, and open valve for the required time. Also mine will not work if there’s any pressure in the one pound tank. They have a safety check valve that will not allow the big tank side to open. Atleast mine does.

20s and 30s both old and new tanks but never on a 40. Are you sure your tank is 100% empty??? Take it outside and screw couple on and that will let everything out. Even a tank ran out on a stove still has pressure

Did you try letting them set overnight?

if the valve is working it should only take a few seconds. the directions spec a minute.

If your main supply tank is only 40% full then any tank you fill will only be 40% full.
