Anybody know which lakes in the area have the best walleye population. I’m heading south for the weekend and have some time to kill before all the 4th festivities. Any help would be appreciated.

Search rice and le sueur counties, is a start sorry dont know the area well otherwise.July 1, 2010 at 6:44 pm #884037French. That is about the only lake around Faribault that will support walleyes.
July 1, 2010 at 6:55 pm #884042I used to live in Faribault, Cannon Lake right off Hwy. 21 has a good population of Walleye’s a lot of small fish but you will get some action. Roberds has some but I never had much luck there, you will catch northerns and bass as well. If you want to go a little farther west Sheilds Lake just west of Shieldsville has some nice fish in it. If you are not just set on Walleye’s, Cedar is a very good bass/northern lake and Mazaska can be good for a grab bag as well.
July 1, 2010 at 8:23 pm #884059French has a decent population otherwise I would go to Tetonka in waterville, not to far. Good population there.

The go-to spot for ‘eyes in the area is Cannon, best spots are at the west end near Warsaw and on the NE end where Cannon goes under a bridge and into a different lake called Bully Wells. Cannon’s a big lake… actually it’s an impoundment from the damn on the west end of Faribault, but either way, the very very best recommendation I can give you is this:
On 7th St, right by the intersection Western Ave, you’ll find Nagel’s Live Bait. Go in there and ask Andy where the walleyes are hitting… you’ll get the best advice anyone can really give you.
Here’s a few Google Maps links:
East end of Cannon — bridge between Wells and Cannon
West end of Cannon, near Warsaw, fish along the northern shore
I also know there are walleye in Cedar, Shields, Roberds, Mazaska, French, and Fox. Probably others. Looking at the DNR field reports, Mazaska and Fox have some of the best fishing in terms of both numbers and size in the area. Check the MN DNR Lakefinder fishing reports and lake maps for more info and decent habitat.

Gorman has been overtaken by weeds since this winter. Im am not talking fishable weeds, more like the whole lake is completely covered. Never seen it like that before. Something is going on there. Too bad, it can be good there and used to be one of my go-to lakes.
This time of year I would fish Tetonka or Fox. All of the other lakes mentioned are good, but the bite on most of has been pretty slow right now. Those 2 will give you your best shot IMO.
