Was in a bait shop the other day ordering crawlers to take to Canada. As we talked about bait, he mentioned Frabill Fat and Sassy leech bedding. Now with leeches at $40.00 in Canada and $26 here…well you do the math. Was wondering I know it’s OK to take crawlers across the border in bedding…so how about taking leeches in bedding across ?

You can take crawlers across, but they have to be bedded in ground newspaper (Buss Bedding) not dirt. If you get a particularly nasty customs agent, they may ask how long they have been in bedding instead of dirt. They want at least two weeks as I remember. Try this link

They have great bait delivered to your door and may be able to answer your question about taking leeches across.

No leeches can be brought across legally into Canada….

I just checked Ontario fishing regs and that is the correct answer, no leeches can be brought into Canada. Looks like you will have to spend the bucks.

You can bring leeches – just not legally….

A guy at work got busted 3 weeks ago going thru at Fort Frances with leeches. 3 hours of interrigation, vehicle torn apart and 2 $300 fines. Not worth the risk. Plus I would guess from now on he will get torn down every time he goes in the future.
