Hiatal Hernia?

Little off topic maybe, but it has me a little worried.

Went in for my annual visit to the doc and mentioned a pain in my chest, not heart related, but one that bothered me anyway.

He thinks it might be a Hiatal hernia and has scheduled me to have a scope (?) run down my throat and they will take a look.

He says no problem with the procedure, but I’ve heard that before…

Anyway, anybody had this done and or had a Hiatal hernia??

    TIA

Had the same thing done in 2001. No big deal with the procedure. I did have a hiatal hernia as well. You will just have to watch what you eat and drink. I rarely noticed it after awhile, and the pain went away.

About 5 years or so ago I went into urgent care and was told that I had a Hiatal Hernia (Intestines protruding up through the diaphram membrane into the boiler room, rather than down and out the groin area). Anyhow, I kind of let it go and just lived with it….up until a year ago. My wife and I were fishing on Pool 2 when I pulled in the anchor and felt like absoulute crap. I knew something was terribly wrong and said “we’ve got to get the hell out of here, now!”. Long story short, I ended up having having my gall bladder removed and consequently develped pancreitis, which required additional surgery and recovery.

The pain that I associated with my Hiatal Hernia, if I ever truly had that, is now gone! My point being, get a second opinion, get an xray, whatever it takes, because at least in my case it was something else that was causing my chest pains all those years. As I recall, one of the sure signs of gall bladder issues is severe back and shoulder pain in the area of your shoulder blades. Do you have like symptoms? May be something other than Hiatal Hernia. Get it checked out and have it fully determined that is really what your issue is. Good Luck!

Thanks guys, after the brain abcess I get a little nervous when things don’t appear well.

MWC, did you develop chest pains when you were standing and active (like casting ) and they went away after you sat or laid down a bit??

Two years ago I told a doc about it, and once he figured I was not having a heart attack he pretty much blew it off, been putting up with it since, will be nice to get it taken care of.

    Thanks for your replies.

OU812, no this is just a sharp single pain about where the rib cage meets in front and at the bottom of the cage.

I did develop a case of acid reflux ? a couple of weeks ago and it goes with the hernia symtoms the doc says, didn’t put them together at first, and after reading more on it, it looks like the doc may be right, but I’m assuming the scan will tell more, thanks.

I actually got mine from a severe case of food poisoning that led to no stop vomiting. Started vomiting blood and went in. Doc said I ripped the esophagus and had a hiatal hernia (which he said you have for life) as a result. I had some heartburn and pain for about a year. Over time, I didn’t notice it anymore. Now I hardly remember I have it.

You maybe should ask about gallstones too. They can be nasty. They can’t be dissolved like a kidney stone since they are made up of fat. The gallbladder doesn’t do much but if that sucker ruptures you are in some serious trouble.
I guess . if it were me, I’d want this eliminated as a suspect too, just as a precaution.

Thanks, something I’ll ask about when I go in.
