First Time in 37 Years I hook myself past the barb…

Man, been traveling to AL every so often and finally get a trip lined up to fish on our Sunday off, we’re on the fish and what do you know, get hooked while unhooking a fish…

Tried to pull it out myself but that was hard to do…at least the doctor had trouble getting it out…made me feel a little better.

Worst of all is I had to cut the day off for the guy nice enough to take me out…

I had one buried a few weeks ago and a friend had a hook removal kit from Cabelas. It worked great. I tried pulling it out and pushing it through and couldn’t get it out. The kit consisted of a piece of mono with a handle and instructions. It worked great. All he did was wrap the mono around the hook as close to the skin as possible , push the eye of the hook towards the barb and give the mono a solid yank. It disengaged the barb and sent the treble hook flying. It would be a good idea to wear eye protection when using this method.
I hope I never have to use this again but at least I know how now.

Makes me cringe even now. I have done it as well and it is not fun. I wonder how many others out there are will ing to admit to having buried a hook or two this deep? And thanks for mentioning the kit. I was wondering if anyone made one for this purpose.

You can do the same thing with a pliers. Just be sure to push the hook eye down and pull in the same direction as the barb went in. If it is a treble, cut it off off the lure so as to avoid a secondary hooking. Done this to myself and another person. Trying to push the hook through can be a very unpleasant experience.

I’ve done this a couple of times, way past the barb. I tugged and pulled to no avail, my fishing partner wanted to push it all the way through, I declined. The first time after all the tugging and pulling I rotated the hook 180 decrees, came right out, worked the second time also. Hope not to try for three.

Knock on wood, I haven’t managed this yet… although I did manage to impale myself on a treble trying to grab one of Timschmitz’s 2# muskie lures as it was swinging past me as I stood there holding the rod after reeling it in. Fortunately it didn’t get anywhere near the bulb, but it still hurt like an acid-coated SOB.

But he also bought a Humminbird. Small price to pay.

I bury one from time to time—all part of the game I guess. Pushing the eyelet down and jerking it out works great if someone can do the jerking. It works really well if it is your kid and they don’t want to stop fishing. I would say that it seems to work better if you use a superline to pull on the hook—the no stretch seems to really get the hook out in a hurry!
