How sentimental was it to Phil that right before his stroke he was sharing old pics with his kids….You could tell he had Jake on his mind….really the last thing he did before it happened…

I need to stop popping in here. I need to watch the show blindly, but it is too tempting when you know the episode is one where your favorite captain (sorry Brian) passes.

I agree SB, that was very cool to see. I tell you what, if I go too early I would want to have a moment like that with my boys.

ANd yes, they did make up, and they were fine, they just cut off last week’s episode RIGHT in the middle of the argument. But I did get the sense that Jake felt a little responsibility for the stroke because he was the only one that knew about their conversation. He had to be thinking that the added stress on pops didnt help the matter. Either way, I had the lump as well.

It was good to see they made up and hugged it out, Phil saying he would go to treatment with him was great. I’m sure those final days will haunt Jake for the rest of his life, hopefully it’s something he can use to help him get clean. Sad deal all the way around.

Did anyone catch last nights episode? I missed it so I will have to cath it on Friday. My Wife Wendy is a big fan of the show and she has also been following this thread, here are her thoughs on last nights show.

I suspect that Mike Fortner (SP?) of the Time Bandit is going to be the replacement captain for the Cornelia Marie. He was just picked by Jon and Andy to step into that role on their boat when the time comes, and they were just beginning to train him in when this happened. He is already certified to run a boat and said on After the Catch that he had his own boat now (which I thought was odd as he was suppose to run the Time Bandit). I think he will stick around until one of Phil’s sons can get certified to take over for Phil. It just dawned on me when I woke up this morning. You could just see the wheels spinning in Andy’s mind when he said it puts things in perspective when you are complaining about only catching 125 crab per pot when someone else doesn’t even have a captain and the captain is your Dad. Also, Jonathan is with them at the hospital, so knowing him, I suspect he will come to the same conclusion and offer them Mike. One of them had said too that it will be hard next year when the season starts to see the Cornelia Marie out fishing without Phil gone (so we know that the boat will be returning).

Steve – this episode will put a lump in your throat….Next week looks even worse already knowing the true outcome of the situation…

I think the Discovery channel has handled the situation, with a great deal of Respect, and Dignity. I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the last few episodes knowing what has already happened.
    Kudos to them.

Agreed, my wife asked why they would show it and I thought it may be because so many people have become DC fans and in a round about way become a large family.

Reading comments posted on other forums that were dedicated to this, it seems evident I may be close to right.

I think many who have watched the program can relate to at least some part of it, and Phil and his kids are one of them parts many can relate to.

Going to be hard to watch next week, I have the feeling it may get pretty dusty in our TV room.

I just heard a radio ad for the 2 hour show tonight and just about lost it. Seems kind of silly for a guy I never met, yet some people you just the feeling that they are a good person in a world full of bad ones. This will probably be the first one I watch ‘live’ and not DVRed on Friday.

I’m in the same “boat” Pug. I can’t believe how much emotion a silly show has stirred up in me. My DVR failed me last week, so I haven’t seen that episode, so I’ll probably be watching 3 hours straight tonight.

I’ll be recoring it tonight, damm meetings

I do like skipping through the commercials.

It is just a First Class Show the way this season has been produced.

I can’t wait to watch it, but don’t know when that’ll be. I’ll be fishing tonight and the next two days, then back to work for the weekend. Will have to make some time for it later this week.

I wish I could watch it. I haven’t been able to bring myself to watching it for the last 4 weeks because I know what’s coming. I’ll try and pick it up next season.

It sounds so silly but it really breaks my heart for those kids and all of us he connected with in some way.

Good show last night, I had the Kleenex out from the time Phil said he wished he could have been a better father.

Jake I hope gets it together, going to be a rough one for him.

Was interesting seeing more of Phil’s personal life, seems like he was quite the character.

Seems there is more next week.

After the catch was pretty good.

Phil built incredibly detailed bird houses that he sold for $3000.

He like things in twos or threes: Harleys, Corvettes…..wives

He sold his house and lived in a trailer…a kick arse trailer with amazing craftmanship. He had a maid to clean his trailer. He was excited that he bought another house, turns out, it was a 2nd trailer.

He would never take the boat out on a Friday and he never shaved during a crab trip.

Another couple great episodes last night. I was surprised Phil really wasn’t very old, but when you treat your body like he did for 35 + years, I can see how it aged him.

It’s gonna be interesting to see how the Cornelia Marie and crew move forward.

I like the show on his life. Really interesting. Did I hear that right that when he became full share he made something 170k in a couple months, in the 1970s? holy crap.

I especially liked the story about his Dad’s boat getting hit by a rogue wave and dissagpearing for 8 days. Coast Guard gave up on day 8 and all families notified of the crew’s deaths. On day 9 he comes limping into Dutch with no working navigational equipment whatsoever. That’s a movie right there.

I believe that is what he said.

That was another tough couple of hours last night too.

    Caught this off the web.

“”Every October, 250 boats gather in Alaska’s Dutch Harbour, waiting for a radio announcement that can seal their fate. These are crab fishermen, and they’re chasing one of the ocean’s great prizes – the king crab, one of North America’s most popular delicacies. The rewards for a successful season can be immense. In 2004, the Alaskan boats caught 15.4 million pounds (6.8 million kilograms) of crab worth US$65.8 million. On a really successful boat, one fisherman might earn as much as US$100,000 for only five days work. “”

Ya I think they said he made over a 100k for a few days work, and in the 70’s not sure what that would relate to now.

His past may have killed him, but what a past.

I like that he begged to work for free, just to get his foot in the door. He was handsomely rewarded for his commitment to the success of the boat.

How many kids these days would work for free? How many SHOULD?

I think that was the old derby days where the season would only be open for a week and whatever boat caught the most made the most. Now with boat quotas it seems like it is more like 30k-50k per deckhand for a month or so of work.

The tribute said he made $130K in one month. He went from working for free to full share deckhand after one of the crew got injured. He followed that up by stating he wanted to be captain because they made 3 times as much. That is insane!!! $130K in one month in the mid 70s!!!! Amazing!!

I am a little disappointed he spent some of the money on hookers. He was a good looking young man, I guess he did it because he could.

I think if the hookers upset you, it’s best to not know what all he spent money on

Phil the party animal will be missed!
