Camping ideas

I live in Elk River, MN and have convinced the wife to go camping with me and you kids. We are looking for a family campground on a lake (within a 3 hr drive). Im not not looking at the big lakes, just a smaller lake so the kids can fish without wind/wave concerns. Any ideas???? and Thanks

This should be within your 3 hour drive time. Not on a lake, but the Zumbro river. A lot like the Apple if you have been there. Not as crowded. They have tube rental. Nice camping spots and the fishing is pretty good right off the shore there. We usually drift in tubes with our fishing poles. Catch plenty of fish. They have a pool and game room for the kids if its raining or they get boored.

how about just finding an island on the mississippi? and the best part, is its free!

Their is a State Park between Camp Ripely and Brainerd. It is on the Mississippi. I have fished next too it on the river and have caught some nice Smallies and Walleyes. Actually my first ever Musky came from their. I dont think it gets used much and looked like a nice campground when I was their last. I used to fish from canoes I borrowed from Camp Ripely when I was their for Guards.

Are you going to have a boat??

If so, I’d go to Upper Red Lake. Great fishing and good camping.

If not, the Zumbro will be nice. The islands on the Mississippi are also fine.

The State Park in MOntticello is good. Lk Maria St Park. So is interstate park in Taylors falls. Lots of good ones in Brainerd and just past Millacs also.
