I certainly hope this columnist gets plenty of letters that politely show him what a moron he is. And someone like this gets to write for the Star Tribune?

Does he realize all of the DNR studies out there that show slot limits yield to more and bigger fish? Where are these fish then coming from?

One study of rainbow trout certainly can’t be generalized to walleye, bass or anything else for that matter. Yes, there are certain situations where fish most likely won’t survive such as great lakes trolling for salmon. On the other hand, other situations will give nearly a 100% survival rate. The great fishing we have today on well managed lakes serves as fantastic evidence!

Wow…..I love how he backs up his theory with concrete data and provides a link to his “recent study in Canada.”

Guys who spout off in a newspaper looking to validate their own existence? Don’t get me started!

What a bonehead. You cannot compare a trout to other fish when it comes to catch and release.

As for his analogy about holding you under water for a minute, I have yet to see a fish drown that was taken out of the water.

He might be a little over the top but some of the recommendations are spot on. Playing a fish to exhaustion that your planning to release and then doing a prolonged picture taking session sounds to me like a surefire way to kill a fish.

While I agree that you should release the fish quickly,I really don’t think it will “Air-Drown” in under a couple of minutes. This is why we usually help the walleyes back into the water….To help them get back the oxygen they lost. But this guy took some “Canadian Study” and personal opinion and created what some might think is fact!!! WRONG AGAIN Mr.MEDIA!!!!

The study was on rainbows. They were probably pond trout. In that case he is spot on. Farmed or Tame trout will usually die with CPR.
