I am headed to Vermillion this weekend with a bunch of guys and we are renting a houseboat and are wondering what the best way to pull the boats behind it is. There are going to be 4 16′ aluminum boats. I have had lots of different thoughts on how to configure them, but just wondering if anyone out there has done this and found something that works good. Thanks

All we have ever done is tie bumpers off to the sides, and stagger the rope lengths. They should run true while the Mothership is under power. We then pulled them in one at a time to disconnect.

    Have fun!!!

Just be careful when bringing the “mothership” to a stop that the boats don’t collide with the rear and cause damage to your boats or the rented houseboat.

The place I worked last year used lengths of PVC pipe with a bungee cord between each length of rope then clips used for climbing to attach to the houseboat and fishing boats. The PVC helped keep the fishing boats from contacting the houseboat and the bungee cord helped keep any stress from waves and shifting of the boats to a minimum.

Fifty years ago my dad used this approach to tow disabled dairy trucks…threaded a log chain through a 6 inch cast pipe with old tires for a bungees. One time we even succesfully pull-started a car with auto transmission. (His middle name should have been Strategy, although I remember older cousins calling him “Uncle Toots” because he hauled cream –and other “commodities”– in from the country
