Anyone ever put braid on a spincast reel?

Wondering if it works well or if the lack of memory and slickness cause slippage problems, etc.

    Thanks.

You need to back it with some mono first to prevent slippage

I have 6# 8# and 12# braid on my spinning reels and love it. I put one wrap of friction tape on the spool to keep the braid from slipping.

I have 10# Berkely Crystal on my ultralight, 20# on both my regular rods and 80# ProLine on my big game rod… and I have no backing on any of them.

I put a 1/4″ square of electrical tape on the arbor knot when I spool them up and that’s it… and while I’ve spooled myself, I’ve never lost my line.

I highly recommend superline… it just makes fishing that much more fun.

I may have read his post title wrong but it asked …

“Anyone ever put braid on a spincast reel?”

Most all have used it on our spinning reels with mono backing, but how well does it work on a “spincast” reel?

    I am curious also

Not a true braid but, I’ve been using my sons ugly stick combo to test out Fireline Crystal since last year. It seems like he has lost a little casting distance and will have it bite into itself on the spool if he really buries a cast into the weeds. But I feel that the benefits of superline have out weighed the drawbacks since he began using it. I’ve been meaning to put some on his Diawa Silvercast but haven’t done it yet.

I’ve been running 20lb power pro on 6 different spinning rod setups for the last 7-8 years and I use a little tape on the spool to prevent slipage and it works well. these big channel cats here would take you to the woodshed with anything less.

If you are indeed talking about a spincast reel and not a spinning reel, then I would be concerned. Most spincast reels use a narrow spool that is not cross wound. You might have trouble with line dig into the spool whilst playing a large fish. I also have difficulty with casting crankbaits. You get an awful lot of line twist and any wind knots can be a real pain. You also get a lot of fouled plugs with braid. Stop the cast short or even bump the line as it is flying off the reel and you get a foul most of the time. I have switched to fluorocarbon, but the 10 pound line I am using casts more like 20 pound. My solution is going to be a fluorocarbon leader connected to the braid as the braid casts nicely, but that is with a wide diameter spinning reel.

I think it was Zebco that had a spincast reel designed specifically for braid, but I don’t know if it’s still being produced. As I recall it had a ceramic line pickup to address the abrasion issue caused by some braids. A buddy got a couple of them for his nephews and they worked fine as far as I know.

rmartin, good catch… I didn’t even notice that the post was asking about SPINCAST REELS not spinning reels.

That makes a lot more sense.

And no, I haven’t. Try it and let people know how it works for you.

I put some fireline on a customers spincast reel a few years ago. He reported that it would not cast very far at all. I’ve never tried since then though. I would think that the rougher line would be hard on the pickup pin.

Berkeley Crystal is the only superline I can think of that mightbwork. It’s entirely replace mono in my arsenal… It may go OK on a spincaster.

The only advice I’d give is try to match the diameter of the superline to the diameter (NOT weight) that the reel was intended for. Smaller diameter may be OK, but I wouldn’t go much smaller.

I thought that it would be great to put braid (power pro) on the rod set ups for my wife thinking that she then would be able to feel bites easier, big mistake, she could not keep the line tight enough on the spool to keep it from digging into itself and worse yet the line cut into the pick up pins. Have fixed the reels and put flourocarbon on.

Yes, I was thinking about putting it on a Zebco 33 for my kids. Sounds like it may not be the best idea.

I put 25 lb Power Pro on my wifes Rhino reel this season. So far so good. She has had a few snags, kinks etc, but basically had the same problems with mono with so much memory. She uses this for spinner baits and plastic. She caught a nice northern over the weekend in some nasty weeds and we were glad she had the big reel and power pro on. It has taken her a bit to get used to the bigger reel, pole etc but now she really likes it and we have not had problems with the line.
